Hamilton is starting at third base and batting seventh Opening Day against the White Sox on Thursday.
The lefty-hitting Hamilton will end up getting the Opening Day nod at the hot corner over switch-hitting veteran Luis Rengifo, who inked a one-year $3.5 million deal with Milwaukee in February. Hamilton is a "leading candidate" to share playing time at third base with Luis Rengifo, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Rengifo is widely expected to serve as the Brewers' primary third baseman, though McCalvy notes that it's possible the left-handed-hitting Hamilton draws the start at the hot corner Opening Day against righty Shane Smith of the White Sox. Hamilton has slashed just .222/.283/.359 in the majors but has had a great spring, hitting .298/.365/.468 with one home run, five stolen bases and a 5:8 BB:K. The 28-year-old is most known for his speed, and he is likely to be an asset in the stolen-base department if the at-bats are there.

The Brewers acquired Hamilton on Monday in a trade with the Red Sox, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Hamilton is a former Brewers farmhand who has slashed .222/.283/.359 over the past three seasons in Boston. While he's mostly played second base and shortstop, Hamilton will be given lots of reps at third base during spring training, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. That position currently looks wide open in Milwaukee, though another addition from outside the organization can't be ruled out.
Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics.
The homer was Hamilton's fifth of the season and his first in the month of September. The lefty-hitting infielder has struggled mightily at the plate in 2025, and he has been unable to take on a strong-side platoon role over the righty-hitting Romy Gonzalez at second base. Hamilton will likely continue to be used primarily as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, batting .201 with four doubles, 17 RBI and 21 stolen bases over 87 games.

Abreu's injury has resulted in Ceddanne Rafaela getting more time in the outfield than at second base.

Hamilton is slashing just .193/.252/.293 over 153 plate appearances on the season for Boston, but in spite of that lack of production, he seems to have temporarily captured a regular spot in the starting nine at the keystone when the Red Sox face right-handed pitching. With Wilyer Abreu's (calf) recent move to the injured list allowing Ceddanne Rafaela to shift back to the outfield, Hamilton started in the Red Sox's previous two matchups versus righties and went 4-for-8 with a triple, two walks, four runs and one stolen base between those contests. Hamilton's track record in the majors suggests he shouldn't be expected to offer much impact with the bat moving forward, but he could be a decent source of steals while he's playing at least somewhat regularly.

Hamilton is drawing the start at second base Thursday versus the Yankees and could see semi-regular action there if the Red Sox opt to use Ceddanne Rafaela as a full-time outfielder following the injury to Wilyer Abreu (calf). The speedy Hamilton has slashed only .174/.227/.265 in 69 games with the big club this season, though he does have 17 stolen bases in 21 attempts.
