Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Optioned to Triple-A
The Rockies optioned Halvorsen to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports.
Halvorsen entered spring training as a candidate for high-leverage work but pitched his way into a stint in the minors by yielding 12 runs with an ugly 4:12 K:BB over five innings of work. The hard thrower will try to get back on track at Albuquerque and could still have an important role in the Colorado bullpen down the line.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Not expected to make roster
Halvorsen is not expected to make the Rockies' Opening Day roster, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports.
There's no official move yet, but Halvorsen does not have a locker in the team's clubhouse. The hard-throwing righty entered spring training as a candidate to serve as the Rockies' closer, but he struggled mightily in Cactus League play, allowing 12 runs with an ugly 4:12 K:BB over five innings of work. Halvorsen could still play an important role in Colorado's bullpen this season, but he'll work on honing his craft at Triple-A Albuquerque for a while. Victor Vodnik is the favorite to open the season as the Rockies' closer, but it's a bullpen situation fantasy managers would be best off avoiding.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Faces hitters Monday
Halvorsen (elbow) tossed a live batting practice session Monday.
Halvorsen looks to be free of restrictions in the opening weeks of spring training after he didn't pitch after Aug. 2 last season due to a mild right elbow flexor strain. Prior to getting injured, Halvorsen had seemingly established himself as the Rockies' preferred closer, though his numbers (4.99 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 36:21 K:BB, 11 saves in 14 chances over 39.2 innings) weren't overly remarkable. Even so, Halvorsen still looks like one of the best bets for saves in Colorado entering 2026, given his raw abilities along with the lack of reliable alternatives in the Rockies bullpen. Halvorsen ranked third in the majors last season with an average fastball velocity of 100.0 miles per hour, and his 13.1 percent swinging-strike rate and 54.4 percent groundball rate offer hope that he'll be able to raise his strikeout rate and improve his ERA and WHIP.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Resumes throwing
Halvorsen (elbow) has resumed throwing from 60 feet and is hoping to return from the injured list prior to the end of the season, MLB.com reports.
This marks Halvorsen's first notable progress since he was sidelined in early August with an elbow injury. He hopes to pitch in a game before the season is over, but Halvorsen is expected to be at full strength shortly after the campaign ends if he cannot return.

Halvorsen (elbow) is continuing his rehab, but he will not begin the next steps toward his return to the field until early September, MLB.com reports.
The Rockies continue to say that Halvorsen could return this season, but it appears that he will only be available for a few weeks at best. His role upon his return could also be murky, as Victor Vodnik has turned in five consecutive scoreless appearances, piling up four saves and a win.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Could return in 2025
Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Monday that Halvorsen has been diagnosed with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow and could be activated from the 15-day injured list prior to the end of the season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Halvorsen was pulled after just five pitches in his relief appearance in the ninth inning of Saturday's 8-5 win over the Pirates and landed on the IL a day later. The good news for Halvorsen and the Rockies is that the 25-year-old does not have a serious injury that would have necessitated surgery, and if all goes smoothly in his recovery process, he could be back in action at some point in the next few weeks. Halvorsen has collected a 4.99 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB across 39.2 innings this season and has converted on 11 of 14 save attempts. Schaeffer mentioned Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia as the top candidates to close games for the Rockies while Halvorsen is on the shelf.

The Rockies placed Halvorsen on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right elbow strain.
Halvorsen's elbow acted up Saturday, prompting the Rockies to pull him from the contest midway through Spencer Horwitz's at-bat. Though Dugan Darnell ended up finishing out the contest, Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia could be the top options for saves while Halvorsen is on the shelf. According to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, the right-hander will undergo an MRI on Sunday, and he's likely to miss more than the minimum 15 days. Halvorsen has converted 11 of 14 save chances while providing a 4.99 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB in 39.2 innings on the season.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: May have serious elbow injury
Halvorsen suffered a right elbow injury in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Pirates, and Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said after the contest that the closer's injury "don't look good," Christian Saez of TheDNVR.com reports.
Halvorsen threw only five pitches before he was removed in the top of the ninth inning in the middle of Spencer Horwitz's at-bat. Halvorsen earned the save in Monday's 8-6 win over the Guardians, allowing one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in the ninth inning.
Halvorsen was called upon to protect a three-run lead after the Rockies rallied in the top of the ninth, and he managed to hang on despite throwing just 13 of 27 pitches for strikes. Halvorsen threw a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 6-5 win over the Orioles. He did not record a strikeout.
Halvorsen was asked to preserve a one-run lead in the ninth and did so on only 11 pitches. While a five-run blowup against the Red Sox on July 9 still lingers, the 25-year-old has converted five straight save chances and posted seven scoreless outings in nine appearances since last blowing a save June 19. For the year, he's 10-for-13 in save opportunities with a 4.89 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 35:18 K:BB across 38.2 innings.

Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Tallies ninth save Friday
Halvorsen picked up the save in Friday's 6-4 win over the Twins, allowing one hit and no walks during a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two.
The save was the ninth of the year for the 25-year-old right-hander, who fanned multiple batters for the first time since June 18. Halvorsen surrendered five runs while failing to record an out his last time out in Boston, so he bounced back nicely from that meltdown as well. The last-place Rockies do figure to rank toward the bottom of the major leagues in save opportunities the rest of the way, but Halvorsen at least seems to be first in line for those chances despite submitting a 5.15 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 2025.

Halvorsen walked a batter during a scoreless inning and earned a save against the White Sox on Sunday.
Halvorsen worked around a two-out walk to close the 6-4 win. He's now converted eight of his 11 save chances this season and has five saves in his last eight appearances. Halvorsen dropped his season ERA to 4.04 with a 32:16 K:BB across 35.2 innings. He's given up two earned runs over his last 10 innings and has recorded the only two saves on the roster since July 1.
