  The Blue Jays optioned Bloss (elbow) to Triple-A Buffalo on March 8. Buffalo placed Bloss on its 60-day injured list Friday, a transaction that was merely a formality since the right-hander is expected to be out for more than two months to begin the season while he completes his rehab from the UCL surgery he underwent last May. If Bloss has a smooth recovery and is quickly able to regain his pre-surgery command and velocity, he could be a candidate for a late-season call-up to Toronto.

  Bloss could be brought up from Triple-A Buffalo in September if the Blue Jays elect to go with a six-man rotation for the final month of the season, Kaitlyn McGrath of the Athletic reports. Acquired in the Yusei Kikuchi trade with Houston, Bloss has made three starts for Buffalo in August, tossing 9.2 scoreless innings with an 8:5 K:BB. The 23-year-old right-hander is in his first full professional season after being a third-round pick of the Astros in 2023, so Toronto is keeping an eye on his workload, but he's only thrown 75.2 innings so far across four levels -- he started the year at High-A Asheville. A regular turn in September could set Bloss up for a full-time spot in the Jays' rotation in 2025.

  Bloss has joined Triple-A Buffalo and is slated to start for the affiliate Saturday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Bloss was acquired from the Astros at the trade deadline as a part of the return package for left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and will now make his first start with his new organization at the Triple-A level. Before the trade, the 23-year-old made three starts with Houston, giving up nine runs over 11.2 innings while striking out 11 batters. General manager Ross Atkins said following the deadline last week that Bloss will get some run at Triple-A before joining the major-league rotation later this season.

  General manager Ross Atkins indicated Tuesday that Bloss will get some "breathing room" at Triple-A Buffalo before being called up and added to the Blue Jays' rotation, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. "Our ideal outcome is that he's helping us this year and growing and developing here in Toronto," Atkins said. "We're going to get to know him, make sure that he's in the strongest possible spot." The right-hander was part of the package the Jays received from Houston in the Yusei Kikuchi deal, but Bloss will begin his Toronto tenure in the minors to help him get settled. Assuming he sees game action for Buffalo, the Bisons will be the fifth different affiliate the 23-year-old has pitched for this season -- he began the year with High-A Asheville before stints at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugarland, eventually making his big-league debut with the Astros on June 21. Bloss posted an impressive 1.64 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 63:21 K:BB in 66 innings across his three minor-league stops, but he got tagged for five homers in 11.2 frames for the Astros before the trade.

Bloss did not fare well against a hot Athletics lineup. He began by allowing a leadoff triple before Brent Rooker took him deep to put the Astros in an early 2-0 hole. Lawrence Butler was next to homer off him in the third before Seth Brown and Zack Gelof went back-to-back in the fourth. Bloss hasn't been able to cover more than four innings in any of his three starts since getting promoted just over a month ago and he'll likely see his time in the bigs temporarily come to an end next week once Justin Verlander (neck) returns from the injured list. Bloss has a 6.94 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB in 11.2 innings.

Bloss got off to a bit of a rough start, surrendering a solo homer to Bryan De La Cruz in the second at-bat of the game before then throwing two wild pitches in the second inning, which helped lead to another run coming across for Miami. However, the right-hander appeared to settle in after that, hurling two scoreless innings before being relieved by Shawn Dubin to open the fifth. Bloss threw 82 pitches in his first start since returning from the injured list and induced nine whiffs while throwing first-pitch strikes to 13 of 18 batters. He'll look to build off this performance in his next start, which will come after the All-Star break.
