  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Avoids arbitration with Halos

Suarez signed a one-year contract with the Angels on Friday to avoid arbitration, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez will remain with the Angels for a seventh season. Across 22 major-league outings in 2024, he posted a 6.02 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 56:27 K:BB across 52.1 innings.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Fans five in no-decision

Suarez allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Wednesday. All of Chicago's runs against Suarez came via the long ball -- the left-hander gave up a two-run shot to Korey Lee in the second inning and a solo blast to Lenyn Sosa in the fourth. It was the only time this season Suarez gave up multiple homers in an outing. That's partly due to the fact that he spent much of the campaign as a reliever, though he came into Wednesday having yielded just two long balls over his past 36 frames. Suarez returned Sept. 9 from an extended stay on the injured list and had held his opponents without an earned run over 13 frames prior to giving up Lee's second-inning blast Wednesday.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Drawing another start

Suarez is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox in Chicago. Suarez joined the rotation last week following the demotion of Caden Dana to Double-A Rocket City and the placement of Samuel Aldegheri (finger) on the injured list. While making his second start of the season last Thursday in Houston, Suarez took a no-decision while striking out five and holding the Astros to one unearned run on three hits and two walks. He could make for an attractive stream option during the final week of the season as he faces a hapless White Sox squad that has already lost 120 games.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Solid over five frames

Suarez did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Astros on Thursday, allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five. Suarez allowed just two walks and a single over the first three frames before Yainer Diaz reached on a fielding error to open the fourth. The veteran lefty would then see a run come home after surrendering back-to-back singles, but he was able to retire the next six batters in succession to complete five innings for the first time on the campaign. Suarez looked solid in his second start this season and he's now recorded five strikeouts in back-to-back appearances. He'll look to secure his second win of the season next week when the Angels travel to Chicago to take on the White Sox.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Getting start Thursday

Suarez is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Astros, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. As expected, Suarez will be moving from the bullpen to take over the rotation spot that opened up after the Angels demoted Caden Dana to Double-A Rocket City and placed Samuel Aldegheri (finger) on the injured list. Suarez has made just one other start with the Angels this season, which came back on June 11 versus the Diamondbacks. He failed to escape the third inning in that outing and was charged with four earned runs on six hits and one walk.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shifting to rotation

Suarez will move into the Angels' starting rotation after Sam Aldegheri (finger) was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The left-hander had his contract selected by the Angels on Sept. 9 and had made two appearances out of the bullpen. He's on the same pitching schedule as Aldegheri, as Suarez struck out five over four scoreless innings of relief in Friday's loss to Houston after the former lasted just two innings. Suarez owns a 6.80 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 46:23 K:BB in 42.1 innings over 20 appearances (one start) with the big club this season.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Nabs three-inning save in return

Suarez earned a save against the Twins on Monday, walking one batter and striking out four in three hitless and scoreless innings. Suarez returned to the big-league club Monday after spending over two months in the minors. The left-hander tossed 48 pitches (28 of which were strikes) against Minnesota, allowing just one baserunner in an impressive outing. Suarez has experience as both a starter and a reliever in the majors, and it seems likely that he'll function in a long-relief role down the stretch if he remains on Los Angeles' roster.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Back on big-league roster

The Angels selected Suarez's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. Suarez was removed from the 40-man roster back in June but has made his way back to the majors after posting a 6.54 ERA and 62:17 K:BB over 52.1 innings covering 11 starts. The left-hander will likely operate in a long-relief role.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Remains in organization

The Angels outrighted Suarez to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. Suarez passed through waivers unclaimed and will remain in the organization. The left-hander held an 8.15 ERA over 18 appearances (one start) this season before being removed from the 40-man roster. The Angels could have Suarez get stretched back out as a starter at Salt Lake as they look to get him back on track.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Angels designated Suarez for assignment Monday. Suarez looked like he was going to be a solid mid-rotation starter for the Angels when he posted a 3.86 ERA and 188:69 K:BB over 207.1 innings between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He's struggled mightily at the big-league level ever since, however, posting an 8.22 ERA over 29 appearances (eight starts). He also missed a large chunk of the 2023 season with shoulder problems. Still, as a 26-year-old that's shown promise in the past, another organization could take another chance at Suarez via trade or waiver claim.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Blasted as bulk reliever

Suarez (1-2) took the loss against San Francisco on Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over one-plus inning. Ben Joyce worked two frames as the opener in the contest, and Suarez was deployed next, presumably to attempt to cover multiple innings. That plan seemed to be on track when the left-hander tossed a scoreless third frame (despite giving up two hits), but Suarez then allowed five straight batters to reach -- on three doubles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch -- in the bottom of the fourth and was consequently given the hook. Suarez has given up nine runs over 3.2 innings across his past two appearances, pushing his season ERA up to an ugly 8.15.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Unable to complete three innings

Suarez dropped to 1-1 on the season in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings. Suarez made his first start of the season Tuesday and didn't make a particularly compelling case to earn additional turns through the rotation. He allowed a pair of runs in the second after giving up two triples and a single, and Randal Grichuk would tack on a two-run blast in the third to spell an early end to Suarez's night. The 26-year-old's 7.08 ERA on the season is the second-highest in all of baseball among pitchers who have pitched at least 30 innings, trailing only Kyle Hendricks (9.07). If Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list the next time Suarez's turn comes up Sunday in San Francisco, the latter will presumably head back to the bullpen.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Moving into rotation Tuesday

Suarez is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Suarez made 58 starts for the Angels over the past five seasons, but after losing out in a battle for a rotation spot in spring training, he's been working exclusively as a reliever in 2024 and has posted a 6.54 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 34:20 K:BB in 31.2 innings. He won't be moving into the rotation on merit, but he'll nonetheless slot into the starting spot that had been previously occupied by the struggling Reid Detmers, who was recently demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake. Even if Suarez acquits himself well in a starting role Tuesday, he could be headed back to the bullpen immediately thereafter with Chase Silseth (elbow) nearing a return from the 60-day injured list.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Loses arbitration case

Suarez will make $925,000 in 2024 after losing his arbitration case to the Angels on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Suarez had an 8.29 ERA across 33.2 innings last season and was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old lefty posted a 3.86 ERA in 45 appearances (34 starts) during the 2021-22 campaigns, and he'll likely need to get back to that form to have a chance of working out of the rotation regularly in 2024.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Back from injured list

The Angels reinstated Suarez (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Suarez has been on the shelf since early May and was pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in late July, but he's apparently made significant progress behind the scenes at the Angels' spring training facility in Arizona over the past month. Before straining his left shoulder in May, Suarez had been part of the Anaheim rotation, but due to his extended absence, he'll most likely be eased back into the mix in a relief role.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Begins rehab assignment

Suarez (shoulder) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Angels' Arizona Complex League team Tuesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two batters. Suarez last pitched for the Angels on May 7, when he departed his start against Texas after 2.2 frames with left shoulder discomfort. He was moved to the 60-day IL on June 20 but recently began throwing to hitters before taking part in the ACL game Tuesday. Per MLB.com, Suarez will make another rehab start Sunday, this time with a full-season affiliate. It hasn't yet been decided whether the left-hander will work as a starter or a reliever upon his eventual return to the big club.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shifted to 60-day IL

The Angels transferred Suarez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Suarez has been on the injured list since May 8 with a left shoulder strain, and his recent transfer to the 60-day IL will keep him out for at least the first week of July. The move opens up a spot for Kevin Padlo to be selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and join the Angels' infield.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: No structural damage found in MRI

Suarez will be shut down for about a month with left shoulder inflammation, but his MRI revealed no structural damage, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez left Sunday's start in the second inning after feeling soreness in his left shoulder, and the MRI revealed the inflammation after he was placed on the injured list Monday. The shutdown will cause him to miss the rest of May and the start of June, but the positive news is it doesn't appear he'll need surgery and should be an option for the Angels for the second half of the 2023 campaign at the very least.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Undergoing MRI on shoulder

Suarez will undergo an MRI on Monday after exiting Sunday's start against the Rangers with left shoulder discomfort, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez first felt soreness in the second inning before finally being removed in the third when it didn't dissipate. A stint on the injured list for Suarez seems likely even if he gets favorable news from the MRI, especially since his spot in the Angels' rotation was already on thin ice. Chase Silseth went 3.1 innings in relief of Suarez on Sunday and would be an obvious candidate to replace him in the rotation.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Leaves with trainer

Suarez exited Sunday's start against the Rangers with an athletic trainer, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Suarez was charged with seven earned runs across 2.2 innings, but his removal is clearly injury related since the Angels didn't have any relievers warming up. It remains to be seen if the issue will affect his availability for the next turn through the rotation.
