Padres' Griffin Canning: Earns first win in bulk relief
Canning (1-5) earned the win against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
Canning entered in the second inning and was actually the only Padres pitcher to allow a run, which came via a single in the fifth. The 30-year-old has opened June in uneven fashion, yielding one earned run in two of three outings with a seven-run blowup in between. Overall, he owns a 6.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 41:25 K:BB across 42 innings this season. With German Marquez (forearm) closing in on a return, it's unclear what Canning's role will be for his next turn through the rotation.

Padres' Griffin Canning: Following opener in St. Louis
Canning will serve as the Padres' primary pitcher Wednesday in St. Louis, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Canning has recorded a 10.12 ERA in the first inning this season and lefties are slashing .370/.475/.696 off him, so the Padres will avoid having the right-hander face lefties JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson in the first frame. Bradgley Rodriguez will take the ball first for the Padres on Wednesday as an opener.

Padres' Griffin Canning: Ambushed by Baltimore
Canning (0-5) took the loss Friday, surrendering seven runs on six hits and five walks over five innings as the Padres fell 7-3 to the Orioles. He struck out six.
The 30-year-old right-hander got tagged for three runs in the first and second innings and served up multiple homers for the third time in his last four starts. Canning's return to California after a one-year stint with the Mets has been a disaster so far -- since coming off the IL in early May, he's stumbled to a 7.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 39:22 K:BB in 37.2 innings. With German Marquez (forearm) on the same schedule during his rehab assignment and pitching well, the clock may be ticking on Canning's time in the rotation. After some struggles early in the year, Canning has settled in fairly well, though he's still on the hunt for his first win. He's gone at least five frames in his last four outings, allowing 10 runs across 21.2 innings in that span. The 30-year-old is at a 6.34 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 33:17 K:BB through 32.2 innings over seven starts, so there is still some risk when he draws a tougher matchup. Canning (0-4) took the loss Sunday against the Nationals, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three.
Canning held the Nats off the board until the fourth inning, when Luis Garcia led off the frame with a solo home run. James Wood would then add a two-run shot in the fifth, which proved to be enough to stick Canning with the loss in an eventual 4-2 defeat. He has now allowed five home runs over his last three starts, and through his first six starts this year, Canning sports an ugly 7.16 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB over 27.2 innings. He'll look to get into the win column his next time out, tentatively scheduled to come at home against the Mets.

Canning (0-3) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 6.2 innings against the Phillies. He struck out five.
Following a first-inning solo homer by Kyle Schwarber, Canning settled in nicely through the middle innings, though his outing ended on a sour note when Brandon Marsh blasted a two-run shot with two outs in the seventh frame. After posting a 12.27 ERA and 2.09 WHIP across 11 innings over his previous three appearances, Monday's outing can be viewed as a step in the right direction for Canning. The right-hander will carry a 7.54 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 24:13 K:BB through 22.2 innings (five starts) into his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Nationals.

Padres' Griffin Canning: Stuck with no-decision
Canning allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Canning got off to a rough start, allowing a two-run home run to Freddie Freeman in the first inning. He was able to settle in and left in line for the win, but Jeremiah Estrada was also taken deep by Freeman in the sixth. Canning is still looking for his first win with the Padres, but Tuesday's effort was a positive turn after he had allowed six runs in each of his last two starts. He's at a 9.00 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB through 16 innings over four starts this season. Until he shows more consistency, he'll be a risky option in most matchups. He's projected for a home start versus the Phillies his next time out.

Canning didn't last long Thursday, giving up three runs in both the first and second innings before being pulled. The 30-year-old right-hander labored, throwing just 33 of his 64 pitches for strikes on the afternoon, and he's now surrendered six runs in back-to-back starts after firing five innings of one-run ball in his season debut. Canning has a dismal 10.64 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB over 11 frames thus far, so he doesn't project as a recommended fantasy option in his next scheduled outing versus the division-rival Dodgers.

Padres' Griffin Canning: Unravels in fifth inning
Canning (0-1) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Cardinals on Friday.
Canning was doing fairly well until the fifth inning. He loaded the bases in that frame, and a fielding error by Fernando Tatis led to JJ Wetherholt getting a Little League home run to unload them. Canning then proceeded to load the bases again, and Yuki Matsui allowed two inherited runners to score. This wasn't a great second audition for Canning to stay in the rotation, but the Padres have a number of underwhelming pitchers looking to maintain starting roles. He's allowed seven runs with a 12:5 K:BB across 9.1 innings over his two starts this season. If the right-hander gets another start, it'll likely be on the road in Milwaukee.

Canning will be awarded another turn through the rotation after a sharp showing in his team and season debut last Sunday. Making his first MLB appearance since June 26, 2025 with the Mets, Canning struck out seven and yielded one earned run on three hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox. The Padres' rotation will get additional reinforcements next week with Lucas Giolito likely to be called up from the minors, but another steady performance Friday should put Canning in good position to maintain his spot over Walker Buehler (5.64 ERA in 30.1 innings) or Matt Waldron (7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings).

The lone run on Canning's line was the result of a Drew Romo solo home run. This was Canning's season debut and first start for the Padres after he finished his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, which he sustained as a member of the Mets in June of 2025. Canning worked up to 73 pitches (42 strikes) in this outing, so he's likely another start or two away from being fully stretched out. Last year with the Mets, he pitched to a career-best 3.77 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and 70:35 K:BB over 76.1 innings across 16 starts. Through his first three starts with El Paso, Canning has compiled a 4.32 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB across 8.1 innings. After his 2025 season came to an early end in June due to a torn left Achilles tendon that required surgery, Canning hasn't reported any setbacks since starting his rehab assignment and could be on track to return from the injured list as soon as next week. He built up to 67 pitches in his most recent start, so if he can get further stretched out in Wednesday's outing while showing improved control, the Padres may feel comfortable activating him. Matt Waldron would likely be most at risk of losing his spot in the rotation once Canning is deemed ready to join San Diego.

Once he's activated from the IL, Canning could be a candidate to fill a spot in a San Diego rotation that's currently missing two of its top options in Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Joe Musgrove (elbow).
