  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Sent down to Triple-A

The Blue Jays optioned Berroa to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.

Berroa went 10-for-36 with one home run and three stolen bases this spring but failed to net a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old will play all three outfield spots at Buffalo.

  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Up from Triple-A

The Blue Jays recalled Berroa from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

With Daulton Varsho (shoulder) headed for the injured list, Berroa will rejoin the big-league squad in order to help replenish Toronto's outfield depth. The 25-year-old owns an .825 OPS through 300 plate appearances in the minors, but he's logged just five hits in 24 MLB games. He'll likely be limited to a bench role while with the Jays.

  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Optioned to Buffalo

Toronto optioned Berroa to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

The move makes room on the Blue Jays' 26-man roster for outfielder Nathan Lukes. Berroa has seen inconsistent playing time since being recalled from Buffalo on July 3. Since that promotion, he's gone 5-for-33 with seven runs scored, five stolen bases, one RBI and a 31.7 percent strikeout rate. Berroa will go back to an everyday role in Buffalo.

  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Drawing rare start

Berroa will start in right field and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Red Sox.

With George Springer getting the evening off from playing the field and instead serving as the Blue Jays' designated hitter, Berroa will be called upon to step in as the team's right fielder. Since his most recent promotion from Triple-A Buffalo on July 3, Berroa has picked up just seven starts. He'll likely continue to see limited starting opportunities over the final month of the season and is expected to be deployed primarily as a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch runner.

  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Swipes two bags in rare start

Berroa went 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Orioles.

The 25-year-old switch hitter got the start in right field and hit ninth in the nightcap, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. Berroa has seen only 16 plate appearances in the majors this season, mainly getting deployed as a pinch runner or late-inning defensive sub, but he does have four steals in five attempts. The Blue Jays' acquisition of Joey Loperfido on Monday puts another outfielder between Berroa and more consistent playing time.

  • Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Called up to Toronto

The Blue Jays selected Berroa's contract from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.

Berroa will claim a spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster after the Blue Jays placed Orelvis Martinez on the restricted list Sunday while he serves an 80-game suspension for violating the league's drug prevention and treatment program, per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca. A 25-year-old outfielder, Berroa has been a member of the Toronto organization since 2016 and earned his first big-league call-up after slashing .295/.380/.451 with seven home runs and 29 stolen bases over 222 plate appearances. The switch-hitting Berroa could end up settling into a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching.
