  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Inches closer to roster spot

Barrosa is expected to earn a roster spot after the Diamondbacks reassigned Jacob Amaya to minor-league camp Sunday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Barrosa, who is out of options, was expected to land a roster spot as one of four players seeking three available bench spots. Amaya's reassignment seemingly locks in Barrosa, Tim Tawa and Ildemaro Vargas for Arizona's Opening Day roster, barring any late claims or trades over the next couple of days. Barrosa celebrated the news Sunday by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a Cactus League game against San Diego. He's had a strong spring and batting .333 (14-for-42) with three doubles, two triples, three home runs and nine RBI over 15 spring contests. The switch-hitting Barrosa will operate as the team's fourth outfielder until Lourdes Gurriel (knee) is ready to return.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Out of options

Barrosa is out of minor league options and likely to claim a spot on the Opening Day roster, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The Diamondbacks' roster of position players is mostly set, but four candidates remain, including Barrosa, for three bench spots. That Barrosa is out of options is an advantage. He can play all three outfield positions and provide depth until Lourdes Gurriel (knee) is ready to go. Barrosa has been productive in the Cactus League, batting .324 (12-for-37) with three doubles, two triples, two home runs and eight RBI. Others in the mix are infielder/outfielder Tim Tawa and infielders Jacob Amaya and Ildemaro Vargas. Both Amaya and Vargas are non-roster invitees for whom the team would need to clear 40-man roster spots.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Homers in spring loss

Barrosa started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's spring game against the Angels.

Barrosa is part of the mix to receive starts in the outfield with both Lourdes Gurriel (knee) and Corbin Carroll (hand) unavailable. The timelines of the two injured outfielders vary, with Carroll expected back around Opening Day and Gurriel ahead of an originally estimated June return. Barrosa is joined by Jordan Lawlar, Tim Tawa and prospect Ryan Waldschmidt in the competition for playing time.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Part of platoon in LF

Barrosa went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Friday's 10-5 win over the Red Sox.

The switch-hitting Barrosa started in left field for the second time in the last three games, with both starts coming against lefties. He singled and scored a run in both starts. The lefty-swinging Jake McCarthy manned the spot for the game in between against a right-hander. That platoon may be manager Torey Lovullo's plan going forward as he navigates life without Lourdes Gurriel (knee). The Red Sox have right-hander Lucas Giolito going Saturday, when McCarthy is expected to play left field.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Gets start in left field

Barrosa started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

In the Diamondbacks' first game without primary left fielder Lourdes Gurriel (knee), the switch-hitting Barrosa drew the start against a left-hander (Jacob Latz). Going forward, left field could consist of Jake McCarthy against right-handers while Barrosa or Blaze Alexander take over against southpaws.

  • Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Back in big leagues

Arizona recalled Barrosa from Triple-A Reno on Monday.

The Diamondbacks optioned Barrosa to Reno on Aug. 18, but after a two-week stay in the minors, he'll link back up with Arizona as its active roster expands to 28 men for September. Barrosa has previously played in 15 games with the big club this season, hitting .111 with an 0:10 BB:K in 38 plate appearances. He doesn't project to see steady playing time while he's up in the majors.
