The 27-year-old superstar is batting just .150 (3-for-20) in eight Grapefruit League contests with a double for his only extra-base hit, but Soto was far more productive for Team Dominican Republic, going 6-for-23 (.261) with two homers and a 5:5 BB:K. After a strong first season with the Mets in which he slashed .263/.396/.525 over 160 games with a career-high 43 home runs and a stunning 38 stolen bases -- he had 40 total steals in the five prior seasons combined -- Soto shouldn't be derailed at the plate in 2026 by a defensive switch to left field.

• Mets' Juan Soto: Moving to left field

  Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Tuesday that Soto will move to left field this season, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Though he has predominately played right field in his career, Soto was a full-time left fielder as recently as 2023, so it should not be a difficult transition. Soto finished last among qualifiers with a minus-12 Outs Above Average in right field last season. Stearns mentioned Carson Benge, Brett Baty, Tyrone Taylor and MJ Melendez as potential candidates to start in right field for the Mets in 2026.

"I think we dodged a bullet here," Mendoza said, in reference to the bruised left foot Soto suffered during Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Padres. Soto was forced out of Tuesday's game after fouling a ball off of his foot in the fourth inning, but X-rays came back negative, and the outfielder's soreness already seems to be subsiding a bit. Though Soto is out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale in San Diego, he was scheduled to take some swings in the batting cage prior to the game and could be available off the bench, per Laura Albanese of Newsday. Even if the Mets choose to stay away from Soto on Wednesday, he's expected to make enough improvement after Thursday's off day to rejoin the lineup Friday.
