Boyd went on to allow three more runners to reach base and eventually score, but a fielding error from Nico Hoerner prevented them from counting against the left-hander's ledger. Considering how much Boyd struggled while pitching on shorter rest, the Cubs will likely give him the proper four days before sending him back on the bump, putting him in line to start Game 4 on Thursday (if needed).

Back-to-back doubles from Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts in the second inning allowed the Padres to plate their lone run of the game. Boyd likely would have conceded a few more runs if it weren't for Dansby Swanson's defense, and consistent hard contact from San Diego's offense led to the southpaw's removal in the fifth inning after just 58 pitches. If the Cubs manage to advance to the NLDS, Boyd would likely be called upon to start Game 2 in Milwaukee on Monday.

Boyd will start Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series on Tuesday against the Padres, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
Boyd has been named the top choice for Chicago to open up the wild-card round after Cade Horton went down with a rib injury. Shota Imanaga was presumably also in the conversation, but given his shaky 5.97 ERA over his last six starts, it'll be Boyd who gets the call in Game 1, with Imanaga a candidate to follow in Game 2. Boyd faced San Diego in two starts during the regular season, both in April, surrendering two runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out eight across 11.1 frames.

Coming off a rough outing in which he lasted just three frames versus Pittsburgh, the left-hander bounced back strong by retiring 13 of the first 15 batters he faced. His lone blemish came in the fifth, when Francisco Alvarez connected for a two-run homer. Boyd had entered the contest struggling with a 6.54 ERA across his previous six starts, but he closed the regular season on a high note. In his first year with the Cubs, the 34-year-old was a steady rotation piece, finishing with a 3.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 154:42 K:BB through 179.2 innings.

The left-hander has taken three losses in his last five starts, posting a 5.65 ERA and a 24:8 K:BB across 28.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Nationals his next time out.
