Daniel Stumpf: Designated for assignment
Stumpf (elbow) was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Thursday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
Stumpf was already a non-tender candidate due to his role as a lefty specialist, as the league will implement a three-batter minimum for pitchers in 2020, and he now finds himself off the team's 40-man roster. The 28-year-old cleared waivers and opted to become a free agent, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. In 48 appearances this season, the southpaw recorded a 4.34 ERA with 28 strikeouts over 29 innings pitched.

Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Done for season with elbow injury
The Tigers placed Stumpf on the 60-day injured list Monday with a left elbow strain.
Stumpf's injury won't necessarily keep him out of commission for two months, but the move to the 60-day IL officially ends his season and opens up a 40-man roster spot for reliever Marcos Diplan, whom the Tigers claimed off waivers from Minnesota. A lefty specialist who likely won't bring much utility with the MLB implementing a three-batter minimum for pitchers in 2020, Stumpf looks like a potential non-tender candidate for the Tigers this winter.

Stumpf was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.
Stumpf has been on the big-league roster all season and has pitched capably enough, recording a 4.44 ERA in 26.1 innings. Both his 20.2 percent strikeout rate and 10.5 percent walk rate are worse than average, though not by a large amount. The Tigers recalled Stumpf from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
With righty reliever Buck Farmer moving into the rotation to make a spot start Sunday against the Twins, Stumpf will move up to the big club to give the Tigers another southpaw out of the bullpen. Over 41 appearances with Detroit this season, Stumpf has submitted a 7.11 ERA and 2.01 WHIP across 25.1 innings and will likely see his usage limited mainly to lefty-on-lefty matchups.

Stumpf has appeared in 28 games for Detroit this season, accruing a 5.71 ERA and 1.90 WHIP with 14 strikeouts over 17.1 innings. He'll likely be used in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen, given his alarming ERA.

Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Cleared for bullpen session
Stumpf (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this week, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Stumpf is having no issues throwing all of his pitches from flat ground, so he'll progress to mound work for the first time since landing on the disabled list near the end of May. The lefty will eventually need to face live hitters before returning, leaving his possible return date up in the air.

Stumpf was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with left ulnar irritation, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Stumpf last pitched on Monday, walking the only batter he faced. He is apparently dealing with some swelling in his elbow which has caused tingling in his fingers. Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Charged with another loss
Stumpf (1-2) was tagged with the loss and a blown save Monday against the Rangers. He retired just one of the three hitters he faced, allowing an earned run on two hits.
Stumpf came on in the seventh inning with a runner on base and two outs, and he promptly allowed a single to Shin-Soo Choo to bring home the inherited runner to tie the game. He then gave up a triple to Jurickson Profar that plated the go-ahead run. Stumpf has taken the loss in two of his last three appearances, and he's allowed three earned runs over an inning of work in that time to bump his season ERA up to 3.55.

Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Records first win Wednesday
Stumpf (1-0) recorded his first win of the season in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates by tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while striking out one.
In a game that featured 23 total runs and 34 hits, Stumpf was one of the few pitchers who performed effectively. The lefty now has a solid 2.16 ERA for the season. His fantasy value is limited due to his middle-relief role, but he should continue to be one of Detroit's most reliable bullpen options.

Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Pitching well this spring
After a scoreless outing in Thursday's Grapefruit League loss to the Braves, Stumpf has his spring training ERA down to 2.57 across seven innings.
Stumpf is likely going to be the team's top left-handed option this season, and he's looking the part in spring training. Stumpf profiles as a true LOOGY for the Tigers, as righties posted an .873 OPS against him last season. That makes him valuable in Detroit, but limits his fantasy appeal outside of leagues that count holds.

Tigers' Daniel Stumpf: Considered top lefty in bullpen
Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio suggested Wednesday that Stumpf will enter the season as the team's top left-hander out of the bullpen, Chris McCosky of MLive.com reports. "Big stuff, great stuff," Bosio said of Stumpf. "This guy knows what he's doing. We are trying some things with him and he's got the aptitude to do it, as well. We've got a special left-handed reliever right there in Daniel."
So far in spring training, Stumpf has picked up where he left off in 2017, when he finished the season as the Tigers' undisputed top southpaw reliever. Considering the lack of impact arms in the Detroit bullpen, however, that distinction doesn't mean a whole lot for Stumpf, who remains best suited for a true LOOGY role rather than one that requires him to record three-plus outs against hitters from either side of the dish. Opposing righties torched Stumpf last season to the tune of an .873 OPS, a 261-point difference from his mark against lefties.
