  • Phillies' Matt Imhof: Retires from professional baseball

    Imhof announced Wednesday that he would retire from professional baseball, ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports.

    The 47th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, Imhof pitched for four of the Phillies' minor-league affiliates in two and a half seasons before losing his right eye during a freak accident last June, Imhof was able to replace the eye with a prosthetic one, but determined it was best to call it a career. The 23-year-old posted a 3.91 ERA over 53 innings for High-A Clearwater in 2016.

  • Phillies' Matt Imhof: Loses right eye

    Imhof lost his right eye after suffering a freak accident last week in Florida, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

    Imhof was hit in the face by a piece of metal that broke lose when he was using a resistance band that was anchored to the wall. In addition to destroying his right eye, the metal also fractured his nose and both orbital bones.

    Imhof underwent surgery after suffering an eye injury during routine stretching exercises, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.

    Imhof's injury occurred during a freak accident when a piece of equipment broke and hit his right eye. He's expected to need further treatment, as the injury seems to be quite serious and could be career-threatening. Imhof had a 3.91 ERA and 1.60 WHIP at High-A Clearwater this season.
