Mets' Tyrone Taylor: Backup outfield duties on tap
Taylor has held onto a spot on the Mets' Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
The 32-year-old will be the top backup to the injury-prone Luis Robert in center field, and Taylor could also spell rookie Carson Benge in right field against tough left-handed pitching. Taylor stole a career-high 12 bases over 340 plate appearances in 2025 while slashing .223/.279/.319 with two homers.

Mets' Tyrone Taylor: Settles with Mets at $3.8 million
The Mets and Taylor avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Taylor had been eligible for salary arbitration for a final time. The veteran outfielder has slashed only .235/.289/.361 in his two regular seasons with the Mets but has graded well defensively both years. Taylor currently looks to be at the top of the Mets' center-field depth chart, though the club is expected to pursue upgrades at the position this winter.

Taylor (hamstring) is playing in a minor-league rehab game Sunday and could join the team in Chicago ahead of a three-game series against the Cubs that starts Tuesday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.
Taylor has been on the shelf since Sept. 2 due to a strained left hamstring, but after embarking on a rehab assignment Friday, Taylor is on the brink of returning. Once activated, the 31-year-old will likely be on the short side of a platoon in center field with Cedric Mullins.

The Mets placed Taylor on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a left hamstring strain, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
The 31-year-old has been battling hamstring discomfort over the past few days and will now head to the IL after being diagnosed with a strain. The severity of the strain is unclear, so it remains to be seen if Taylor will be able to return after spending the 10-day minimum on the shelf.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Taylor has been dealing with hamstring discomfort over the last few days, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Taylor hadn't played in either of the Mets' last two games, though New York faced right-handed starters in both of those contests and likely wouldn't have included in the lineup even if he were healthy. The hamstring issue seems to be a day-to-day concern for Taylor, who has been showing improvement and should be back in action before long.

Taylor went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored during the Mets' 19-9 win over the Marlins.
Taylor collected his four RBI on two separate doubles in the second and eighth frames. It was his third multi-RBI game of the season and first since June 17 against Atlanta. Taylor has three multi-hit games in his last seven games and has gone 10-for-21 (.476) with six RBI and six runs scored over that span.

With eight hits and a 3:1 BB:K over the last six games, Taylor has been one of the Mets' more productive hitters of late, but he still appears to be relegated to the short side of a center-field platoon. He had been included in the lineup in five of the previous six games, but four of those starts came against lefties. As anticipated, Taylor will be back on the bench Wednesday while Taijuan Walker toes the rubber for the Phillies.

It's his second three-hit performance in his last four games as the veteran outfielder's playing time begins to pick up again. Taylor has gotten the nod twice in center field and twice in left since Aug. 21, and while three of those starts came with southpaws on the mound for the opposition, Brandon Nimmo's recent difficulty staying healthy could offer Taylor more opportunities outside of his usual short-side platoon role.

Taylor went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Friday's win over Atlanta.
Getting the start in left field and batting seventh, Taylor joined in a 21-hit, 12-run barrage by the Mets. The veteran outfielder has started the last two games with Brandon Nimmo (neck) unavailable, but prior to that Taylor hadn't gotten a plate appearance since Aug. 5, as the acquisition of Cedric Mullins relegated him to a bench role. Roster depth wasn't the only reason for Taylor's reduced playing time -- he'd gone just 2-for-28 since the All-Star break before Friday's performance. Once Nimmo is clear to return, expect Taylor to once again be a spare part in the New York outfield.

Taylor went 0-for-4 with one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over the Giants.
Taylor is batting just .119 (5-for-42) in July, but it has yet to cost him his share of playing time in center field. He's still managed to pick up a pair of steals over 16 games this month, giving him 11 thefts on 12 attempts this season. The veteran outfielder is slashing a career-low .206/.261/.302 with two home runs, 18 RBI, 27 runs scored, 13 doubles and three triples across 286 plate appearances.

The right-handed-hitting Taylor had started in five of the Mets' last six games while the team faced left-handed starters in all but two of those contests, but he'll be left on the bench Monday, even though the Angels are sending southpaw Tyler Anderson to the hill. Taylor should still find himself in the lineup against lefties more often than not, but his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching appear to have tailed off while Jeff McNeil has gotten more exposure to center field lately.
