Yan Gomes: Cut loose by Cubs
The Cubs released Gomes on Friday.
The veteran backstop was designated for assignment Wednesday and was let go by the Cubs just two days later. Gomes struggled to a .154/.179/.242 slash line and 37.5 percent strikeout rate in 96 plate appearances this season prior to being let go by Chicago.

Cubs' Yan Gomes: Loses roster spot
The Cubs designated Gomes for assignment Wednesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Chicago has signed Tomas Nido to take Gomes' roster spot and serve as the primary backup to top catcher Miguel Amaya. Gomes, who turns 37 years old in July, has a dreadful .421 OPS and 37.5-percent strikeout rate over 33 games this season. He's making $6 million in 2024, and the Cubs will have to eat the remainder of that salary after Gomes clears waivers.

Cubs' Yan Gomes: Losing work to Amaya
Gomes is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros.
The 36-year-old is on the bench for the seventh time in 10 games and appears to have moved into the No. 2 catcher role behind youngster Miguel Amaya, who draws another start Thursday. Gomes is a trusted game caller behind the plate but has taken a big step back with the bat in 2024, posting a .486 OPS while striking out at a career-worst 35.1 percent rate through 37 plate appearances.

After going hitless in his first nine at-bats, Gomes has rebounded with a hit in three straight games. Tuesday's outing was his first multi-hit performance of the campaign, and the long ball was also his first. Gomes has been in a near 50-50 timeshare with Miguel Amaya behind the plate, but he could win some more work back if he can remain a reliable bat.
