Joc Pederson's debut in Texas went worse than David Clyde's did in the 1970s. At least Clyde was still fresh out of high school and clearly rushed, but Pederson had 10-plus seasons under his belt as a free agent and did so poorly, the Rangers are highly unlikely to be picking up their end of the 2026 mutual option at $18.5M, since they likely feel ripped off for the $13.5M they paid Pederson in 2025 to watch him post a 76 wRC+. The walk and strikeout rates were right in line with career norms, but a right-hand fracture in late May kept him out of the lineup until late July. It could be said the hand fracture did him a favor because he was hitting .131/.269/.238 in 146 plate appearances before this injury and hit .224/.300/.406 after it in 160 plate appearances. Pederson suffered a similar statistical setback during the pandemic season, yet bounced back to some respectability the following season. The biggest issue for Pederson last season was an astronomical drop in his batting average against righties, as his .179 effort was 102 points below 2024's effort and 62 points below his now career norm. You should be intrigued in the very late game on this likely bounceback alone.

He's batting just .171 (6-for-35) with zero RBI over 15 Cactus League games. Both Andrew McCutchen (.533 average) and Mark Canha (.316, three HR) have been better than Pederson.

Coming off a rough first season with Texas in which he posted a career-low .614 OPS over 305 plate appearances, Pederson decided against becoming a free agent over the winter and picked up his $18.5 million player option to remain with the Rangers for 2026, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. While Pederson is likely to maintain a regular spot in the lineup as the Rangers' primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, he hasn't shown many early signs of reclaiming the power production that eluded him in 2025.
