  • Collin Cowgill: Embarks on coaching career

The Mariners announced Wednesday that Cowgill has been hired as the manager for the organization's Double-A affiliate in Arkansas, signaling the end of his playing career, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. Cowgill had previously joined the Seattle organization on a minor-league deal last winter, but he didn't receive a promotion to the big club at any point during the 60-game 2020 campaign. The 34-year-old outfielder likely could have landed another minor-league deal this offseason if he wanted to keep his playing career going, but he'll instead transition into coaching. Cowgill, who last appeared in the majors in 2016, retires with a .234/.297/.329 slash line across 759 career plate appearances with the Diamondbacks, Athletics, Angels, Mets and Indians over parts of six big-league seasons.

  • Mariners' Collin Cowgill: Still battling for roster spot

Cowgill was still battling for a roster spot when spring training was suspended, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. The veteran, who last saw major-league regular-season action with the Indians in 2016, hit .250 (4-for-16) with one home run, one RBI and two runs across 12 Cactus League games. Cowgill appears to be battling Carlos Gonzalez for the final outfield spot, as Jarred Kelenic is expected to start the season at Double-A Arkansas and Braden Bishop has already been optioned to minor-league camp. Cowgill's best all-around big-league campaign came back in 2014 with the Angels, when he slashed .250/.330/.354 with 16 extra-base hits (10 doubles, one triple, five home runs) and 21 RBI across 106 games.

  • Mariners' Collin Cowgill: Invited to Mariners' camp

Cowgill signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Saturday as a non-roster invitee, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. After spending the past several seasons at the Triple-A level, Cowgill will get to work with the major-league coaching staff in 2020. The 33-year-old hit .228/.330/.440 with 12 home runs and eight stolen bases with Triple-A Fresno. Cowgill last appeared in the majors with the Indians in 2016.

  • Phillies' Collin Cowgill: Inks NRI agreement with Phillies

Cowgill signed a minor-league deal with Philadelphia on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports. Cowgill will earn $800,000 if he makes the big-league roster. In 2017, the outfielder appeared in 58 games for Triple-A El Paso within the Padres' organization, slashing .235/.297/.390 with seven home runs and 24 RBI. He hasn't competed in the majors since playing in 55 games with the Angels in 2015, and is unlikely to make much of an impact at the highest level during this upcoming season.

  • Padres' Collin Cowgill: Returns from rib injury

Cowgill (rib) went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the Padres' Cactus League game against the Giants on Saturday. Cowgill had been sidelined for the previous two weeks with rib-cage tightness, which has effectively taken him out of the running for a reserve gig in the outfield. Look for him to be reassigned to minor-league camp in the coming days and open 2017 with Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Collin Cowgill: Scratched from lineup Saturday

Cowgill was scratched from Saturday's lineup with rib cage tightness. The issue doesn't seem overly serious, but he should be considered day-to-day for now. Cowgill is in a battle with Jabari Blash, Nick Buss, and Rafael Ortega for a reserve outfield spot, but the 30-year-old is likely bound for the minors to start the season.

  • Indians' Collin Cowgill: Is in Tuesday's lineup

Cowgill is in the lineup and batting ninth for Tuesday's game against the Mariners. Cowgill is just 1-for-9 to start the season, but will get the start in place of Jose Ramirez. His fantasy value is minimal due to a lack of playing time and offensive production.

  • Indians' Collin Cowgill: Starting in right field Wednesday

Cowgill will bat ninth and play right field in Wednesday's game against the Rays. Cowgill is hitless in five at-bats this season, but draws into the lineup over Jose Ramirez in the outfield while Marlon Byrd slides over to left field. Cowgill is coming off arguably his worst season last year, hitting .188 in 55 games with the Angels. Upon Michael Brantley's return, Cowgill will likely find at-bats extremely difficult to come by.

  • Indians' Collin Cowgill: Will start Opening Day

Cowgill is in the lineup for Monday's season opener against the Red Sox. Cowgill opens the season as the Indians' fourth outfielder, but he will make a start Opening Day with the Indians loading up on right-handed hitters against Red Sox star lefty David Price. Cowgill will man right field and hit ninth in Monday's batting order.

  • Indians' Collin Cowgill: Still in the running for reserve role despite spring struggles

Cowgill has struggled at the plate this spring, hitting just .132 (5-for-38) but his ability to handle all three outfield spots defensively may help him make the Opening Day roster, MLB.com reports. "It was hard, because he was struggling so much. But, what he does - the defensive player, the baserunner - the things he can do are there," manager Terry Francona said. Cowgill did have a pair of hits against Clayton Kershaw on Thursday and he may still make the Opening Day roster as the Indians figure to carry five outfielders to start the season but he may not have much of a role given the surprising spring of rookie Tyler Naquin.

  • Indians' Collin Cowgill: Could benefit from Abraham Almonte's suspension

Cowgill could benefit from Abraham Almonte's suspension, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Cowgill has been in competition with Rajai Davis in left field, but now that Almonte is out for 80 games after being suspended for PED use, his path to playing time could be a little easier. Davis could potentially slide into Almonte's center field role, allowing Cowgill to take left field. However, once Michael Brantley returns from his shoulder injury in early May he will likely become a reserve. Cleveland's outfield situation is worth tracking throughout spring training.

Cowgill logged 74 plate appearances in 2015 with the Angels, but posted his worst strikeout rate since 2011 (25.7 percent), while failing to provide much power. The 29-year-old will likely find himself competing for a reserve outfield role to begin the season.
