The Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa has earned a place in baseball history as the site of the 1989 movie of the same name starring Kevin Costner. On Thursday, the MLB is coming to pay its respects for a historic regular-season game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. An MLB-ready ballpark was constructed in the corn next to the one that Costner's character Ray Kinsella erected during the famed film and both teams will be in retro 1919 uniforms.
Both teams are in the hunt for the MLB playoffs and that should make for exciting action, with the White Sox sitting at 67-48 and the Yankees at 63-51. First pitch of the Field of Dreams game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET and Chicago is the -177 favorite (bet $177 to win $100) with over-under at 9.5 runs in the White Sox vs. Yankees odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Why you should back the White Sox
The White Sox will send AL Cy Young favorite Lynn to the mound on Thursday and he'll bring a 10-3 record with a 2.04 ERA and 130 strikeouts over 114 2/3 innings into the contest. Lynn is a bulldog with a unique arsenal that features three different fastballs (four-seam, cutter and sinker) he throws a staggering 92.8 percent of the time and he'll pose problems for a Yankees lineup that ranks fourth in the AL in strikeouts (1,038).
Meanwhile, the White Sox will be hoping that Eloy Jimenez can continue carrying an offense that is getting healthier and hoping to get into a rhythm for the stretch run. Jimenez has a 1.030 OPS since returning to the lineup after missing four months with a torn pectoral and he has four multi-hit games in his last five contests. The White Sox have also slugged .455 against left-handed pitching since the start of last year and they'll take on Yankees lefty Andrew Heaney on Thursday.
Why you should back the Yankees
New York is currently third in the American League East and is two games behind the Red Sox for the second AL Wild Card spot this season. But the Yankees should be feeling confident riding a five-game winning streak over the White Sox into Thursday's matchup. They've also won five of their last six matchups straight up on the road (they're technically and logistically the road team for Thursday).
The Yankees have gotten themselves back into the playoff conversation with a 17-8 record since the break and the pitching staff has limited opponents to three runs or less in 14 of those contests. And even with Andrew Heaney taking the ball (5.45 ERA on the season and 7.20 ERA since joining the Yankees), New York shouldn't be afraid to empty out the bullpen if needed with a day of rest scheduled for Friday. New York's 3.52 bullpen ERA is the third-best in the American League this year and the seventh-best in baseball.
