Twins starting pitcher Phil Hughes had an Opening Day showdown with Tigers ace David Price. Unfortunately, Hughes did not emerge victorious as Price was pretty dominant in a 4-0 win for the Tigers.
Hughes (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings. He opened the game with a scoreless first inning before running into trouble in the second inning. J.D. Martinez led off the inning with a solo home run. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a double before Alex Avila hit a two-run homer two batters later.
Hughes, who struck out six, allowed his fourth run of the game on Nick Castellanos' sac fly in the sixth inning, which followed a one-out triple by Cespedes.
The right-hander is slated to make his next start Sunday against the White Sox.
