As Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter led the majors with 216 hits and ran his career total to 3,304, some prematurely wondered whether Jeter can break Pete Rose's all-time record of 4,256 hits.
Just in case you're wondering, 200 hits a season gets Jeter there late in the 2017 season. He'd be 43 years old. The prospects of collecting 200 hits a season aren't great, either, considering Jeter hasn't had back-to-back 200-hit seasons since 2006-07.
Also just in case you're wondering, Pete Rose doesn't believe Jeter will catch him, via Joe Posnanski at Sports on Earth:
"I don't think he will break the record," Rose says. "First of all, I don't think he wants to leave the Yankees. And the Yankees, they're about winning. Jeter had a great year this year, but he's what? Thirty-eight years old? And he's a shortstop? How many 40-year-old shortstops you see walking around? Not too many, right? And they can't put him at third because A-Rod's there. They can't put him at second 'cause Cano's there. He don't help them in left field -- he's got to be in the center of things, you know what I mean? What are they going to do? Put him at first base?
"He still needs 950 hits, right? He had a great year this year, but you think he can do that again? At 39? A shortstop? Let's say he does it again. Let's say he gets 200 more hits next year. And let's say he gets 200 more hits when he's 40, though I don't think he can. OK, can he get 200 more hits when he's 41? You think he can?"
No, I don't. I also don't need Pete Rose to tell me about it.
But hey, a lot of people still care what Rose thinks. To those people I recommend Rose's entire interview in Posnanski's piece -- such as when Rose specifically says "I do not bad-mouth baseball" and then turns around and, you know, bad-mouths baseball.
Also, the remaining die-hard Rose fans have Pete's upcoming reality show on TLC!
Say what you will about the Hit King, but he definitely won't go away, even with a lifetime ban from baseball.
