If baseball allowed fans to vote on the All-Star Game announcers, then the odds are Vin Scully would've been selected in this, his final season at the mic.
Obviously baseball doesn't allow fans to pick their own announcing booth; the folks at FOX who are in charge of stuff like this, however, reportedly made an effort to include Scully in the broadcast.
Alas, Scully rebuked their efforts. Here's Richard Deitsch with Scully's explanation:
Scully told Zager the last thing he wanted was for his name to overshadow the players in this year's game. It's also been an exhausting time for Scully with all the media requests and adulation he has received. Said Zager: "He told me, 'I'm not Kobe Bryant. I'm just out there calling games.'"
Scully reportedly also noted that he'd called All-Star Games before, albeit decades ago, meaning this wouldn't be a new experience that he just had to have before turning off his mic. Fair enough.
To recap: nice gesture on FOX's part, and nice reasoning on Scully's part. Everyone and everything involved here is nice.
