On May 24, 1936, Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri became the first man in Major League Baseball history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

Lazzeri went deep in the second inning off George Turbeville and then again in the fifth inning, off Herman Fink, to make history with his second granny of the game.

The game itself was pretty ridiculous. Lazzeri's Yankees beat the A's 25-2. The Yankees had 19 hits, including three doubles, three triples and six home runs. Seven of the Yankees' nine hitters gathered at least two hits while all nine starters scored at least two runs.

Lazzeri himself did much more damage than just the two grand slams -- which sounds absurd to say. He was 4-for-5 with a triple and three homers (is 15 total bases good for one game?). I think we all need a deep breath before the RBI total is revealed, though.

Lazzeri had 11 RBI in the game. Eleven!

What's with the Red Sox and Orioles? Wow.

As far as Lazzeri's totals, only three other players in MLB history collected at least 15 total bases and 10 RBI in a game. Walker Cooper of the Reds was 6-for-7 with three homers and 10 RBI on July 6, 1949, Fred Lynn was 5-for-6 with a triple, three homers and 10 RBI on June 18, 1975 and Mark Whiten clubbed four homers and drove home 12 on September 7, 1993.

What a day for Lazzeri, and it happened exactly 78 years ago.
