Former Major League Baseball player Carl Crawford was arrested in Houston on charges of assaulting his former girlfriend in a dispute over the man she has started dating, according to the Associated Press.
Crawford on May 8 showed his ex, Gabriele Washington, a handgun while also unloading it in front of her, according to the arrest affidavit. He then is alleged to have started asking her questions about her current relationship.
From there, things appear to have escalated further. Washington told police that Crawford pushed her to the floor, slammed her head against the wall and choked her.
Washington then said their one-year-old daughter (Crawford and Washington's together) walked up, which allowed her to distract Crawford so she could get away to call the police. Once she called, Crawford fled the scene, but since followed up with threatening texts, per the report.
Crawford is currently out after paying a $50,000 bond.
Roughly a week after the alleged assault, two people, including a 5-year-old boy, drowned in Crawford's pool in Houston. The matters appear to be unrelated.
Crawford, 38, played in parts of 15 seasons in the majors, most prominently with the Rays but he also spent time with the Red Sox and Dodgers. He was a four-time All-Star and made over $170 million in salary.
He hasn't played in the majors since 2016. He has since been the CEO of a record company, 1501 Certified Entertainment, in Houston.
