Cardinals third baseman David Freese was removed from Game 4 of the NLDS in the sixth inning. He has been battling right calf tightness and was forced to leave Game 3 early as well, but it's unclear if that's why he left Game 4.
Freese, 30, has had on and off right leg problems over the years, including tendon reconstruction surgery to his ankle in 2010. If the injury is serious enough that the Cardinals have to replace him on the roster, Freese would be ineligible to play in the World Series if they advance.
In 138 games this season, Freese hit .262/.340/.381 (101 OPS+) with six home runs. He came into Game 4 with five hits in 26 at-bats (.192) during the postseason.
Pete Kozma came into to replace Freese. He played shortstop while Daniel Descalso slid over to third base.
