White Sox right fielder Alex Rios had quite the night Tuesday in Detroit. He went 6 for 6 with a triple in an 11-4 White Sox victory.
Gathering six hits in one game is a rather outstanding night in and of itself. Rios had three previous five-hit games in his career -- the most recent coming in 2010 -- but never a six-hit game.
This is the 98th time in all of MLB history that a player collected at least six hits in a game. Unbelievably, the record is nine (Johnny Burnett on July 10, 1932). Three men had a seven-hit game (the most recent being Rennie Stennett on Sept. 16, 1975). The rest of the group were six-hit games. The most recent time this had happened before Tuesday actually wasn't that long ago. Brewers shortstop Jean Segura did so on May 28 of this season.
And then there this -- which you already saw in the headline: Rios got four of the hits off Justin Verlander, the first time in the esteemed career of Mr. Verlander that he's allowed four hits to an opposing player in the same game.
Rios wasn't alone in having a fun night at the plate, as the White Sox pounded out 23 hits, including three home runs -- two by Dayan Viciedo. They also scored seven runs in the eighth inning after having not scored as many as seven runs in a game since June 28.
