After Sunday's results, here's your 2014 playoff bracket ...

As noted in your postseason schedule, the action gets started Tuesday. While in the days ahead we'll be rolling out full previews for each wild card game and each postseason series, here's just a taste of what's ahead ...

AL wild card game, Athletics at Royals: We've got aces high, as Jon Lester (2.46 ERA, 219 2/3 IP) opposes James Shields (3.21 ERA, 227 IP). The Royals will be playing at home, of course, and they're 5-2 against the Athletics this season (although the A's have outscored them by two runs in those seven games). Hitters presently on the A's have a career line of .217/.268/.309 against Shields, while current Royals have hit .248/.333/.387 against Lester.

NL wild card game, Giants at Pirates: It's Madison Bumgarner against the surprisingly effective Edinson Volquez. While it's very easy to read too much into single-season home/road records, we'll nonetheless note that the Pirates are an MLB-best 51-30 at PNC Park. The Giants, though, are one of only three NL teams with a winning record on the road. Bumgarner against current Pirates has allowed a line of .268/.312/.341, while Volquez against hitters presently on the Giants has surrendered a not-exactly-promising slash line of .283/.355/.428.

ALDS, Athletics/Royals vs. Angels: The Angels don't seem to have a World Series-worthy rotation without Garrett Richards, but MLB's best offense and a revamped bullpen can carry them. This season, the Angels are 10-9 against Oakland and 3-3 against the Royals.

ALDS, Tigers vs. Orioles: It's the Tigers' powerhouse rotation versus the Orioles' standout defense and power attack. Whether Detroit's bullpen can pass muster may be the key. The O's were only 1-5 against Detroit in the regular season.

NLDS, Giants/Pirates vs. Nationals: The Nats this season were 4-3 against the Pirates and 5-2 against the Giants. Regardless of opponent, the Nats will be coming off a no-hitter and trying to erase memories of their crushing collapse in the 2012 NLDS

NLDS: Dodgers vs. Cardinals: It's a rematch of the 2013 NLCS. Can Clayton Kershaw bounce back from last year's rough postseason? During the regular season, the Cardinals dropped four of seven against the Dodgers and were outscored by 11 runs.

As mentioned, we'll be rolling out more extensive previews soon. Happy playoffs!
