On Friday Jordan Spieth was named 2013 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year ahead of David Lingmerth, Russell Henley, and Derek Ernst.

The Texan was always going to win the award, some people (myself included) just wish the votes were made public so we could see if anyone even voted for the other three golfers.

Spieth started the season in January as the 810th-ranked golfer in the world. He ended it in September as a member of the Presidents Cup team and seventh in the final FedEx Cup standings.

He also ended it nearly $4 million richer from PGA Tour money.

"It's a tremendous honor," Spieth said. "It's been a great year for rookies on the PGA Tour."

I would say it's been a good one for rookies, a great one for Spieth.

But forgive the youngster for a bit of hyperbole, maybe he meant it's been a great last seven years for Rookies of the Year on the PGA Tour.

Because it has:

2007: Brandt Snedeker
2008: Andres Romero
2009: Marc Leishman
2010: Rickie Fowler
2011: Keegan Bradley
2012: John Huh
2013: Jordan Spieth

A group of stars, for sure, but I think Spieth has more staying power than any of them. We thought Fowler was young and composed in 2010 when he was 21 and finished in the top 10 seven times in 28 events.

Speith took that to the next level in 2013, though. He played most of the season as a 19-year-old and finished in the top 10 nine times in 23 events (including a win).

As many have noted, Spieth was the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 1996 to go from no PGA Tour status to start the season to playing in the Tour Championship to cap the year.

On a day when Woods won his 11th PGA Tour Player of the Year Award, one has to wonder about the symmetry. And whether or not Spieth can walk in Tiger's footsteps.
