Americans have dominated the U.S. Open throughout its history, winning 86 of the 121 tournaments, or 71 percent. That stranglehold atop the leaderboard has lessened recently, however, as Americans have won just half of the last 18 editions entering the 2022 U.S. Open. International golfers such as Spaniard Jon Rahm and Irishman Rory McIlroy are among that group of foreign winners, while Americans Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson are recent domestic victors.

Model's top 2022 U.S. Open predictions
One huge shocker the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2022: Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson, one of the golfers who has defected the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, struggles mightily and finishes well outside the top 50. He's a risk to miss the cut, making him a poor value for in your 2022 U.S. Open bets at 150-1. He's also a golfer to consider fading in 2022 U.S. Open props and head-to-head matchups.
Mickelson has finished runner-up a record six times at this event, but his last three U.S. Open finishes are 62nd (2021), missed cut (2020) and 52nd (2019). Mickelson hasn't played a PGA Tour event since January and has just one top-25 finish since May 2021. He played in the inaugural LIV Golf event last week but finished tied for 33rd in what was a soft field compared to PGA Tour events. Mickelson shot 11-over-par over the final two rounds and will enter the 2022 U.S. Open as the 77th player in Official World Golf Ranking. Add in the controversy from his ties to the LIV Tour that may affect the local crowd support and Mickelson is one to avoid for any U.S. Open 2022 bets.
On the other hand, the model has also examined Rahm's chances to repeat as champion at the 2022 U.S. Open. Last year's victory at Torrey Pines elevated Rahm to the World No. 1, and he hasn't dipped below third in world rankings since then. He claimed the Mexico Open last month, but finished outside the top 25 in the year's first two majors. His short game has been his biggest fault as Rahm's ranking in strokes gained around-the-green is outside the top 150 after ranking in the top 50 each of the last two years. But all other parts of his game are above average, so if he can remedy his pitching, he could be in contention come Father's Day.
