The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Hawaii will host the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions beginning on Thursday. The opening tee times come at 2:40 p.m ET, and the first PGA Tour event of the calendar year will feature a loaded field. The only way to get in is to have won since the last Tournament of Champions, and seven of the top eight players in the Official World Golf Ranking will tee it up. Xander Schauffele got in by winning the gold medal at the 2021 Olympics, but hasn't won a PGA Tour event since the 2018 Tournament of Champions.
Schauffele is listed at 14-1 in the latest 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions odds from Caesars Sportsbook, but there are five players with better PGA odds this week. That includes world No. 1 Jon Rahm, who is the 17-2 co-favorite with two-time TOC winner Justin Thomas. Who should you back and fade? Before locking in your 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, it's up almost $10,000 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.
Earlier this season at the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, the model was all over Viktor Hovland (18-1) winning his third PGA Tour title.
At the 2021 Open Championship, McClure's best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. He was also all over Daniel Berger (+220) and Emiliano Grillo (+700) finishing inside the top-20. McClure's best bets netted over $2,200 at the 2021 Open Championship.
In addition, McClure's model was all over Jon Rahm's (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner. And at the 2021 Masters, McClure nailed Rahm's (+250) top-five finish in his best bets, as well as Corey Conners' (+550) top-10 showing.
This same model has also nailed a whopping seven majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions field is locked, SportsLine simulated the event 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions leaderboard.
The model's top 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions: Bryson DeChambeau, an eight-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top-10. The 28-year-old is coming off a sensational season, which culminated in a top-10 finish at the Tour Championship at East Lake. DeChambeau secured a total of nine top-10 finishes last season, which included two victories.
However, DeChambeau struggled mightily with his driving accuracy last season, ranking 178th on the PGA Tour. In addition, DeChambeau ranked 146th in strokes gained: around-the-green (-.085) and 97th in scrambling (59.20), which doesn't bode well for his chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week. He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Sentry Tournament of Champions 2022 field.
Another surprise: Jordan Spieth, a 22-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Spieth has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. After falling outside of the top 90 in the OWGR, Spieth has climbed back up to as high as No. 12 and is currently the No. 14-ranked golfer in the world following a huge 2020-21 PGA Tour season.
Spieth put himself in contention regularly with nine top-10 finishes and five finishes inside the top three during 2021 and ended a nearly four-year winless drought with a victory at the 2021 Valero Texas Open. Spieth is now a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour with three major championships and he's proven himself on The Plantation Course, winning the 2016 Tournament of Champions by a whopping eight shots.
