2015 Masters: The 10 best potential winners
Tiger Woods winning is obviously No. 1. What about Nos. 2-10, though? You might be surprised at what the best stories would be.
The Masters starts in one week. No, really, THE MASTERS STARTS IN ONE WEEK!
Of all the thousands of ways things could play out at Augusta next week, there are certainly a few that stand out. That is, not all stories are created equal.
Adam Scott winning another major would not be equivalent to Fred Couples nailing another one down at age 55. Phil Mickelson winning green jacket No. 4 wouldn't be as immense as an amateur winning his first.
You get the point.
Here are the 10 best possible winning stories for the 2015 Masters (we're skipping the completely improbable -- like Ben Crenshaw or Ian Woosnam winning).
1. Tiger Woods: Can you even imagine the furor on Sunday if he won this thing? We've never gotten a Woods major win in the Twitter/Instagram era. The social media world would be completely bonkers.
2. Any amateur: No amateur has ever won the Masters. This would be like if Andrew Wiggins had led the Timberwolves to the NBA championship this season.
3. Fred Couples: I ranked the potential of the old men here. Couples is the most likely of that group to win it again. Would we see him shirtless on the cover of Men's Health next year?
4. Rory McIlroy: The career slam, third leg of the Rory Slam and five majors before turning 26? How is this only the fourth-best potential story?
5. Jordan Spieth: The Kid could tie Tiger Woods as the youngest Masters winner ever (21). I'd venture to say he's still not a household name right now. He would be if he wore green this year.
6. Sergio Garcia: Do people still want him to win a major? I do. I think most do. The fact that he's so polarizing makes it an even better story.
7. Patrick Reed: Can't you see Reed on a pool floatie in the pond on No. 16 the week after the Masters wearing just his swim trunks and the green jacket?
8. Lee Westwood: Another guy still looking for No. 1. I don't think any golfers would mind Westy taking the jacket back to England.
9. Phil Mickelson: This was difficult for me. Is Mickelson a better story than, say, Rickie Fowler? Is he a better story than Bubba Watson winning three in four years? I say yes, but that might not be the consensus.
10. Matt Kuchar: In a lot of ways Kuchar has never really grown out of that amateur persona he put on display while contending as a Georgia Tech student in 1998. It would be fun to see him slip on the jacket.
