Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad through June of 2017, the club said on Friday

"I am proud to manage Manchester City FC and am therefore very pleased to have agreed [to] this contract," he said.

"I have a very good quality group of players and a great team of people to work with on and off the field and at all levels of the club.

"I am focused on the coming season and confident that my team and I will respond to the constant support shown to us by everyone including of course our fantastic fans."

Pellegrini, 61, has won a league title and a league cup with the Citizens since joining in 2013. His team signed Raheem Sterling this summer and is one of the favorites to win the Premier League this season. The team may also add former Chelsea player Kevin De Bruyne, who is currently at Wolfsburg.

City opens up the league season on Monday against West Bromich.
