2020 Kentucky Derby payouts: Authentic wins with Tiz The Law second, longshot Mr. Big News in third

After a four-month wait, for the Kentucky Derby, Bob Baffert-trained Authentic (8/1) raced into the winner's circle at Churchill Downs, edging out heavy favorite Tiz The Law (4/5) for the Derby win. Long-shot Mr. Big News (46/1) made it to third in the race, which saw just 15 horses after a late vet scratch. Thousand Words reared and fell in the paddock area just about 20 minutes before post time.

Authentic's win was a huge surprise and Sportsline had this to say about the upset:

Authentic's upset of Tiz the Law in Saturday's Derby ranks among the biggest upsets in the race's history. Sent off at 3-5 odds, Tiz the Law became just the Derby third favorite that price or lower to lose the Run for the Roses. The other two were Honest Pleasure, who was 2-5 in 1976, and Bimelech, who was 2-5 in 1940. Both finished second, just like Tiz the Law.

Kentucky Derby official results

Tiz the Law currently is a 5-8 favorite in the Derby at William Hill. Post time is 7:01 p.m. ET. Jody Demling has nailed 9 Derby doubles. You can see his long shot to back here.

Serengeti Empress returns to the site of her greatest career victory on Saturday when she leaves the starting gate in the Derby City Distaff. Last year, the Tom Amoss-trained filly went wire-to-wire in winning the Kentucky Oaks at 13-1 odds. Since then, she has developed into one of the fastest fillies in the country. She is the 9-5 favorite, but Bob Weir is fading her. SportsLine has who he's backing instead in this race.

She's been so dominant this year that SportsLine's own Jonathon Kinchen has already said she's a pick to win the Breeders' Cup Mile in November, and here's what he thinks about her chances in today's race. Newspaperofrecord is the 4-5 morning-line favorite. Post time is 4:39 p.m. ET.

The Derby has arrived, and for the first time since 2016 the race will be run on a fast dry track. The forecast is calling for sunny skies and a high of 83 degrees with just a 10 percent chance of precipitation. That is a stark contrast to the last three runnings of the race. In 2017, the race was run on a wet-fast track, and the last two years the race was run in the slop. The fast track could help the chances of the favorite, Tiz the Law, whose only career defeat came on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs. Get SportsLine's superfecta bets for the race here. Last year, it paid $51,000 on a $1 bet.

The Oaks-Derby Double is a popular bet in horse racing. A $1 wager on Shedaresthedevil, who won Friday's Oaks at 15/1, with Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Derby will pay $46.10.

However, the Oaks-Derby Double will-pays also show there is plenty of support behind Max Player, who opened at 30/1 but is projected to be 20/1 based on the will-pays. Max Player is coming off a third-place finish in the Travers Stakes.

A field of nine three-year-old fillies will leave the starting gate for the Oaks, and the Baffert-trained Gamine is even a bigger favorite now. After opening on Monday as an even-money favorite, the filly has dropped to 3-5.

Gamine has never trailed in four career starts. Two starts ago, she won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes by 18¾ lengths. Her only "loss" came after she was disqualified after crossing the finish line first three starts ago at Oaklawn Park.

The Ken McPeek-trained Swiss Skydiver, who has won four of her last five starts, is 5-2, up from 8-5.
