If one overlooks the first three months of the season, Brayan Rocchio was a serviceable middle infielder, posting a .257/.310/.391 slash line with five home runs, six steals and a 96 wRC+ over 80 games from July 1 onward. Over a full season, that projects as an affordable player that won't kill a fantasy team. Alas, the first half of the season can't be ignored. He opened as the starting shortstop, immediately went into a deep funk and was demoted to Triple-A Columbus in early May with one RBI and a .433 OPS. Rocchio eventually filled an on-going revolving door at second base and started all three of the Guardians' playoff games. That encouraging second chance doesn't mean he's in a good spot entering 2026; his defense regressed, and he'll be looking over his shoulder for Travis Bazzana, the club's first-round pick in 2024. Bazzana missed time due to an oblique injury and will likely open in the minors, but a callup by June is possible. That would leave Rocchio and Gabriel Arias to share a utility role up the middle.

As expected, Rocchio was the Opening Day starter at second base, but less expected was his offensive impact. The light-hitting infielder is expected to be a lineup regular at second base, and Rocchio could quiet the calls for a quick promotion for Travis Bazzana, the team's first-round pick in 2024, if he can maintain a productive bat.

This comes as no surprise, as Rocchio was pegged all along to be the team's starting second baseman. He and Gabriel Arias will form the double-play combo for Cleveland. Rocchio's strong second half in 2025 carried over into the Cactus League, as he's slashed .313/.389/.531 with four doubles, one home run, four RBI, two steals and three runs scored over 12 contests. The job may not be his for the whole season, however, as prospect Travis Bazzana, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, is expected to make his debut some time this summer.

The Cleveland infielder played hero in this contest with a 380-foot, three-run blast to walk off the Rangers and clinch the division for his club. Rocchio concludes a relatively productive second half that saw him hit .257 (56-for-218) with four homers, six steals, 32 RBI and 23 runs scored across 66 games after the All-Star break. Arias will play through the injury while the Guardians compete for a playoff spot, but it's unclear what level of activity he can tolerate. Rocchio, who has been the primary second baseman, may see more action at shortstop going forward. His season numbers are negatively skewed by an unproductive first two months (.530 OPS), which prompted a demotion to the minors. The 24-year-old notched his second three-hit performance of the season, with the first coming July 8 at Houston.
