MLB Power Rankings: Cardinals Biggest Riser, Move up 11 Spots to No. 12

Player Outlook
JJ Wetherholt is a shortstop by trade, but he is ready to take over at second base in St. Louis after the club moved Brendan Donovan this offseason. A prospect without an obvious weakness, Wetherholt hit .306 with a .421 OBP, 17 home runs, 23 steals and a 14.7 percent strikeout rate in 109 games across Double-A and Triple-A in his first full season after getting drafted with the No. 7 overall pick in 2024. He went 23-for-26 on stolen-base attempts but isn't a burner and may slow down into his late-20s. Wetherholt has always been seen as a hit-over-power prospect, but his hit tool is good enough that he should access 15-plus homer power early in the majors and could eventually be a 20-25 homer threat in his mid-to-late-20s. Wetherholt could eventually net the Cardinals a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick, so he should be expected to break camp on the Opening Day roster, given that he has nothing left to prove at Triple-A.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Plays hero again Saturday

Wetherholt went 2-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Rays. With one out and runners on second and third in the 10th inning, Wetherholt walked it off by hooking a grounder into right field. The 23-year-old second baseman has made an impact in two straight games to begin his MLB career after homering in his debut Thursday, and while he also committed a throwing error Saturday, he has otherwise quickly established his credentials as an early favorite to win NL Rookie of the year.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Goes deep in major-league debut

Wetherholt went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 9-7 win over the Rays. The top prospect made an immediate splash in his major-league debut, taking Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen deep in the third inning. After making St. Louis' Opening Day roster this spring, Wetherholt is set up in a favorable lineup spot right away after batting leadoff Thursday, which should aid his run-scoring potential.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Officially added to 40-man roster

The Cardinals selected Wetherholt's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. St. Louis freed up a spot on the 40-man roster for their top prospect by placing outfielder Lars Nootbaar (heels) on the 60-day injured list. Following a dazzling 2025 campaign that included stops at Memphis and Double-A Springfield, Wetherholt continued to impress throughout spring training, posting a .386 on-base percentage in the Grapefruit League while contributing two home runs and two stolen bases. He's projected to serve as the Cardinals' everyday second baseman and is expected to bat leadoff in Thursday's season opener versus Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: 'Every opportunity' to make roster

The Cardinals plan to give Wetherholt "every opportunity" to make the Opening Day roster, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Manager Oliver Marmol confirmed as much over the weekend at the team's Winter Warm-Up fan event, saying Wetherholt "definitely has a chance" to make the team. What position he might play is not yet locked down. The Cardinals opened up third base by trading Nolan Arenado, and Wetherholt is currently set to compete for playing time there with Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese. However, if St. Louis winds up trading Brendan Donovan, Wetherholt would then likely focus on winning the second-base job. The Cardinals' top prospect and one of the better hitting prospects in all of baseball, Wetherholt slashed .306/.421/.510 with 17 home runs, 23 stolen bases and a 72:73 BB:K over 109 games between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2025.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Heads to Triple-A

The Cardinals promoted Wetherholt from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Wetherholt slashed .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs, 14 stolen bases and a 40:44 K:BB over 62 games with Springfield to earn the promotion. He had his first two-home-run game of his career Sunday and had collected a 1.012 OPS since June 1 with Springfield. Wetherholt has split his playing time between shortstop and second base this season, but with Masyn Winn holding down shortstop in the majors, Wetherholt's future is likely at the keystone. While it's possible the 2024 first-round pick could push to join the big club in the second half of this season, a 2026 MLB debut is more likely.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Cranks first spring homer

Wetherholt went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run Sunday in Grapefruit League action versus the Astros. Making his spring training debut, Wetherholt had a bloop single in the fourth inning and then in the fifth drilled an opposite-field, three-run homer off righty A.J. Blubaugh. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Wetherholt slashed .295/.405/.400 in 29 games with Single-A Palm Beach in his pro debut last year. The 22-year-old will likely begin the 2025 season either at High-A Peoria or Double-A Springfield.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Nets spring invite from St. Louis

The Cardinals have extended Wetherholt an invitation to big-league camp during spring training. Wetherholt has just 29 games of professional experience under his belt after being taken with the seventh pick of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, but the Cardinals will give their top prospect a look this spring. The 22-year-old will likely begin the 2025 season either at High-A Peoria or Double-A Springfield. In addition to Wetherholt, the Cardinals also invited top pitching prospect Quinn Mathews to camp.
