  The Rockies optioned Halvorsen to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. Halvorsen entered spring training as a candidate for high-leverage work but pitched his way into a stint in the minors by yielding 12 runs with an ugly 4:12 K:BB over five innings of work. The hard thrower will try to get back on track at Albuquerque and could still have an important role in the Colorado bullpen down the line.

  Halvorsen is not expected to make the Rockies' Opening Day roster, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. There's no official move yet, but Halvorsen does not have a locker in the team's clubhouse. The hard-throwing righty entered spring training as a candidate to serve as the Rockies' closer, but he struggled mightily in Cactus League play, allowing 12 runs with an ugly 4:12 K:BB over five innings of work. Halvorsen could still play an important role in Colorado's bullpen this season, but he'll work on honing his craft at Triple-A Albuquerque for a while. Victor Vodnik is the favorite to open the season as the Rockies' closer, but it's a bullpen situation fantasy managers would be best off avoiding.

  Halvorsen (elbow) tossed a live batting practice session Monday. Halvorsen looks to be free of restrictions in the opening weeks of spring training after he didn't pitch after Aug. 2 last season due to a mild right elbow flexor strain. Prior to getting injured, Halvorsen had seemingly established himself as the Rockies' preferred closer, though his numbers (4.99 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 36:21 K:BB, 11 saves in 14 chances over 39.2 innings) weren't overly remarkable. Even so, Halvorsen still looks like one of the best bets for saves in Colorado entering 2026, given his raw abilities along with the lack of reliable alternatives in the Rockies bullpen. Halvorsen ranked third in the majors last season with an average fastball velocity of 100.0 miles per hour, and his 13.1 percent swinging-strike rate and 54.4 percent groundball rate offer hope that he'll be able to raise his strikeout rate and improve his ERA and WHIP.

  Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Monday that Halvorsen has been diagnosed with a mild flexor strain in his right elbow and could be activated from the 15-day injured list prior to the end of the season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Halvorsen was pulled after just five pitches in his relief appearance in the ninth inning of Saturday's 8-5 win over the Pirates and landed on the IL a day later. The good news for Halvorsen and the Rockies is that the 25-year-old does not have a serious injury that would have necessitated surgery, and if all goes smoothly in his recovery process, he could be back in action at some point in the next few weeks. Halvorsen has collected a 4.99 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB across 39.2 innings this season and has converted on 11 of 14 save attempts. Schaeffer mentioned Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia as the top candidates to close games for the Rockies while Halvorsen is on the shelf.

Though Dugan Darnell ended up finishing out the contest, Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia could be the top options for saves while Halvorsen is on the shelf. According to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, the right-hander will undergo an MRI on Sunday, and he's likely to miss more than the minimum 15 days. Halvorsen threw only five pitches before he was removed in the top of the ninth inning in the middle of Spencer Horwitz's at-bat. Given Schaeffer's comments, Halvorsen may be dealing with a serious injury, though the team will presumably await test results before determining next steps. Victor Vodnik could be next in line for save chances if Halvorsen does indeed need to miss time.

  Halvorsen picked up the save in Friday's 6-4 win over the Twins, allowing one hit and no walks during a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two. The save was the ninth of the year for the 25-year-old right-hander, who fanned multiple batters for the first time since June 18. Halvorsen surrendered five runs while failing to record an out his last time out in Boston, so he bounced back nicely from that meltdown as well. The last-place Rockies do figure to rank toward the bottom of the major leagues in save opportunities the rest of the way, but Halvorsen at least seems to be first in line for those chances despite submitting a 5.15 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 2025.

  Halvorsen earned the save in Thursday's 7-6 win over the Astros, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one batter in 1.1 innings. He did not issue a walk. Halvorsen was brought in for the eighth inning to record the final out and came back out for the ninth to protect the Rockies' two-run lead. He gave up a triple and an RBI groundout to start the frame and yielded back-to-back singles, but he managed to escape with the save after getting Cooper Hummel to fly out to right field. It was Halvorsen's seventh save of the season (and fifth since the beginning of June), and he now has a 4.15 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 34.2 innings.

  Halvorsen (0-1) took the loss and was charged with a blown save Monday against the Phillies, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning. Halvorsen had picked up Colorado's most recent save -- Saturday versus Tampa Bay -- but was brought in for the eighth inning Monday with the Rockies up by a run. The right-hander gave up the lead on a two-run homer by Alec Bohm and then allowed three more hits, resulting in two more runs, before he was pulled. Halvorsen's usage in the outing suggests that he's not locked in as Colorado's go-to closer despite tying for the team lead with two saves. Zach Agnos also has two saves and has pitched much better than Halvorsen with a 1.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP to Halvorsen's 5.30 and 1.61 marks.

  Halvorsen picked up a save against Arizona on Saturday, walking one batter in a scoreless and hitless inning of work. Colorado trailed 11-6 midway through the contest but managed to storm back to take a two-run lead into the bottom of the ninth. Halvorsen got the call to close things out and managed to do so despite issuing a two-out walk and throwing just seven of 14 pitches for strikes. Save opportunities have been few and far between for the eight-win Rockies this season, but Halvorsen has managed a pair of saves to tie for the team lead. There doesn't appear to be a clear bullpen hierarchy with the team, as Zach Agnos -- who also has two saves -- pitched in the seventh inning Saturday while Tyler Kinley (who has one save) handled the eighth. For fantasy purposes, there is little reason to invest much in any Rockies reliever, but Halvorsen and Agnos are probably the best targets for managers desperate for saves.
