Smith (1-1) came away with the win in Thursday's rain-shortened game against the Twins, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven over five scoreless innings. Smith punched out a season-high seven batters in Thursday's outing, generating 12 whiffs on 82 pitches (50 strikes) en route to his first MLB win. It was the second time he's logged a scoreless outing and through five starts, and the Rule 5 pick has a 2.30 ERA and 0.95 WHIP, which rank eighth and seventh among qualified starters in the American League, respectively. The 25-year-old right-hander is slated to take on the Brewers at home next week.... See More ... See Less

White Sox's Shane Smith: Allows three runs in no-decision
Smith did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Smith held his own in a pitchers' duel with Garrett Crochet through four innings but couldn't escape the fifth after surrendering a three-run homer. The rookie was lifted at 73 pitches and has now topped 80 pitches just once, despite pitching into the sixth frame in each of his previous three starts. He'll carry a 2.82 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB over 22.1 innings into a road matchup with the Twins next week.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Shane Smith: Takes loss in quality start
Smith (0-1) yielded two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against Boston. Smith did not allow a runner to reach scoring position through five scoreless frames before Trevor Story knocked a two-run double in the sixth inning. Smith was efficient, throwing 50 of 79 pitches for strikes, including 10 swinging strikes. The 25-year-old rookie is still searching for his first win despite some positive results early on. Smith owns a 2.04 ERA alongside a 12:7 K:BB through 17.2 innings. He's lined up for a rematch in Boston next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Shane Smith: Decent in MLB debut
Smith allowed two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out three over 5.2 innings Tuesday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. Smith cruised through 5.2 scoreless innings but got cut short of an opportunity for a quality start after walking back-to-back hitters. The Twins then rallied for five runs off Penn Murfee, taking away an opportunity for a win for Smith in his MLB debut. Smith generated lots of soft contact and showcased legit stuff. He lines up for a road start versus the Guardians next week.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Shane Smith: Makes Opening Day roster
Smith has been informed he has made the White Sox' Opening Day roster, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The Rule 5 pick made the decision easy on the White Sox, posting a 3.38 ERA and 11:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings covering four starts during Cactus League play. Smith could be Chicago's fifth starter, although the team has not yet confirmed what his role will be. His main competition for the White Sox' final rotation spot is Bryse Wilson.... See More ... White Sox's Shane Smith: First pick of Rule 5 draft
The White Sox selected Smith with the first pick in the Rule 5 draft Wednesday, JJ Cooper of Baseball America reports. Smith has a chance to be a viable rotation option for the White Sox as early as this season, and he'll need to be kept on the big-league roster (or injured list) all season, otherwise the White Sox would have to return him to the Brewers. Smith, who has a 93-mph fastball and throws a pair of breaking balls, logged 94.1 innings across Double-A and Triple-A, with all his work as a starter (16 starts) coming at Double-A. He logged a 2.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 67 innings as a starter, and also struck out 39 in 27.1 innings as a reliever. Smith may be eased into his big-league career as a low-leverage multi-inning reliever, but he could also get some starts in the first half.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Shane Smith: Working out of Triple-A bullpen
Smith was promoted from Double-A Biloxi to Triple-A Nashville on Sept. 3. Smith, a 6-foot-4 righty, opened the year pitching in short stints at Double-A before getting stretched out and having success as a starter (2.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 74:22 K:BB in 67 IP). He's finishing the year back in a relief role after getting the bump to Nashville. The Brewers signed Smith as an undrafted free agent in 2021 after he had just undergone Tommy John surgery, as the hurler opted to rehab with professional coaches rather than stay at Wake Forest. His 93.1 innings this year are the most he has thrown in any season on record, so the decision to sign with Milwaukee seems to have paid off. Smith, who works with a running four-seamer at the top of the zone and a wicked slider, is positioned to be a rotation option for the big club next summer.... See More ... See Less
