Player Outlook
Victor Vodnik added velocity in 2025 while adding a seldom-used cutter to his arsenal that he threw to right-handed hitters, albeit without much success. His increased velocity was a surprise considering right shoulder inflammation sidelined the 26-year-old for a little over a month early last season. Upon his return, Vodnik filled a setup role for Colorado until Seth Halvorsen (elbow) suffered a season-ending injury last August. Eight of Vodnik's 10 saves were recorded after Halvorsen got hurt. Vodnik tossed fewer sliders in 2025 in favor of more changeups. Of those who threw a minimum of 200 changeups last season, Vodnik's ranked third overall in BAA (.109), fourth in SLG (.130) and 10th in whiff rate (44.2 percent). It continues to be his best offering each year, but when you can hit triple-digits on the radar gun and consistently throw in the upper-90's, it's no surprise that Vodnik favors his four-seamer. Looking towards 2026, the righty figures to remain in the mix for Rockies saves.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Blows save in first outing of 2026

Vodnik (0-1) blew his save opportunity and took the loss against the Marlins on Sunday. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one across one inning. Vodnik got the call to the mound for the eighth inning with two outs and two on, and he managed to get out of the frame unscathed despite hitting Connor Norby with a pitch to load the bases. Vodnik was brought back out for the ninth, and after getting the first two batters out thanks to a double play, he yielded a double to Javier Sanoja before giving up a walk-off, two-run homer to Owen Caissie. Vodnik was named the Rockies' closer despite a rocky performance in spring training; however, more outings like Sunday's could lead to Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer turning to Juan Mejia to close things out instead of Vodnik.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Favorite to close for Rockies

Vodnik struck out the only batter he faced to notch a save in Monday's exhibition game against the Tigers. Vodnik struggled in Cactus League action, coughing up eight runs on 11 hits with a 5:5 K:BB over 4.2 innings. However, Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer indicated Monday that Vodnik could be first in line to serve as closer, noting of the 26-year-old's save that "we're gonna see a lot of that this year late in the game," per Steve Stockmar of MLB.com. Juan Mejia also looms as a late-inning option for Colorado, but 2025 saves leader Seth Halvorsen is not expected to make the Opening Day roster. Vodnik notched 10 saves for the Rockies last season, posting a 3.02 ERA and 49:26 K:BB over 50.2 frames along the way. While Vodnik looks like the favorite to close games in Colorado, it's a bullpen situation fantasy managers should probably avoid.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Locks down 10th save

Vodnik earned the save Sunday against the Angels, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. The right-hander issued a leadoff walk to Jo Adell but quickly erased it with a double play before ultimately closing the door to secure his 10th save of the season. Vodnik has been outstanding of late, giving up just one run over his last 15 appearances while converting eight saves in that span. The 25-year-old now owns a 2.92 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 47:24 K:BB across 49.1 innings on the year.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Earns sixth save

Vodnik picked up the save in Saturday's 10-7 win over the Diamondbacks. He struck out one over a perfect inning. The right-hander has now converted saves in four straight outings, giving Vodnik six on the year and solidifying him as the go-to option in the ninth for the Rockies while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is sidelined. Vodnik has been scored upon only once in six August appearances, posting a 2.84 ERA. 0.95 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 6.1 innings.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Locks down fifth save

Vodnik picked up the save Friday against Arizona, striking out two in a clean ninth inning. Vodnik secured save No. 5 on the campaign and his third of the month of August. It's notable that Juan Mejia tossed a scoreless eighth inning for a hold, which suggests Vodnik is at least slightly ahead of Mejia in the bullpen pecking order while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is on the injured list. With Vodnik holding a concerning 1.50 WHIP over 37.1 innings this season, however, it wouldn't be surprising to see the closer situation remain somewhat of a committee going forward.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Five-out save

Vodnik allowed one hit and struck out three across 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save Tuesday against the Cardinals. Vodnik took over for starter Kyle Freeland in the eighth inning with runners on first and second, but he struck out both of the batters he faced to get out of the inning. He then had a routine ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. This was Colorado's first converted save since Seth Halvorsen (elbow) landed on the 15-day injured list, so Vodnik appears to be the team's top choice to handle closer duties. His ability to hang onto the role should be in question, however, as he has allowed at least one earned run in five of his last eight appearances.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Will share closer duties with Mejia

Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Sunday that Vodnik and Juan Mejia will share closer duties while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is on the 15-day injured list, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Vodnik has registered two saves this season, posting a 3.55 ERA and 34:20 K:BB over 33 innings along the way. While the right-hander has a big arm and is a groundball pitcher, a 1.55 WHIP and 13.8 percent walk rate portend to trouble. Halvorsen could miss several weeks with a mild right flexor strain, but the Rockies' closer situation is likely to remain difficult to depend on for fantasy purposes.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Back from paternity leave

The Rockies activated Vodnik (personal) from the paternity list Monday. Vodnik missed the weekend series in Baltimore while welcoming a new addition to the family, but he's back in the Colorado bullpen for the start of a series in Cleveland. The righty has six holds and two saves this season and will continue to work in a high-leverage role for the Rockies.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Lands on paternity list

The Rockies placed Vodnik on the paternity list Friday. The right-hander will step away from the team for a few days in order to be with his growing family. Vodnik should be back with the Rockies by Monday's series opener in Cleveland.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Blows saves, tallies win

Vodnik (3-2) blew the save and picked up the win in Sunday's 4-3 extra-innings victory at Milwaukee. He allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout over one inning. Vodnik was called upon in the 10th frame after the Rockies scored a run in the top of the inning. The 25-year-old suffered his third blown save of the season when he allowed the automatic runner to score on a wild pitch; however, he bagged the win when Colorado subsequently took the lead in the top of the 11th. Vodnik was afforded this save opportunity after Seth Halvorsen pitched a scoreless ninth to push the contest into extras. Through 23.2 total innings, Vodnik has pitched to a 2.66 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 22:12 K:BB.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Bounces back for second win

Vodnik (2-2) allowed one walk across a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win Monday against the Nationals. Vodnik had a rough outing Friday, allowing three earned runs against Atlanta across one inning of work. He bounced back Monday and earned his second win of the season, tallying his 13th scoreless effort in 18 total appearances. Vodnik has only one hold for the campaign but is working regularly in high-leverage spots.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Blows save Tuesday

Vodnik blew the save Tuesday against the Giants. He allowed three inherited runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning. The right-hander was charged with a blown save, though he put in a tough position after Zach Agnos' disastrous one-third of an inning. Entering with the bases loaded, Vodnik allowed all three inherited runners to score on a sacrifice fly and two singles. The 25-year-old has delivered a strong 2025 campaign despite a stint on the shelf with a shoulder injury, recording a 2.25 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 16 innings.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: First appearance since activation

Vodnik allowed one walk in a scoreless eighth inning Wednesday against the Cubs. Vodnik was activated from the injured list Tuesday after a five-week absence due to a shoulder injury. Wednesday marked his first appearance since being reinstated, and he entered the game in the eighth inning with the Rockies down by one run. Vodnik has held opponents scoreless in seven of his 10 appearances, but he has a poor 8:7 K:BB and isn't likely to factor into the closer picture in Colorado until his performance improves.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Begins rehab assignment

Vodnik (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with Double-A Hartford on Thursday. Vodnik has been sidelined since April 20, with Thursday marking his first mound work since. He recorded only two outs and allowed two earned runs, but he should need only a few more rehab appearances before being activated.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Throws live batting practice

Vodnik (shoulder) threw a live batting practice session Monday, MLB.com reports. Vodnik is likely to be cleared for a rehab assignment next, although that has not yet been confirmed by the Rockies. The reliever has been shelved since mid-April with right shoulder inflammation but is on pace to return before the end of May.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Resumes throwing

Vodnik (shoulder) resumed throwing Saturday, MLB.com reports. Vodnik landed on the injured list April 20 with shoulder inflammation. He reported that the inflammation has improved significantly, and he's now tracking toward a return in early May.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Picks up five-out save

Vodnik allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out two across 1.2 innings to earn the save Sunday against the A's. Vodnik entered the game in the eighth inning with a three-run lead and struck out two of the first three batters he faced. He remained in the contest for the final frame and stumbled a bit by allowing a pair of singles and a walk. The Rockies provided Vodnik with an additional five runs of support in the home half of the eighth inning, giving him some breathing room and allowing him to record his first save of the season despite the stumble.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Takes loss against Rays

Vodnik (0-1) allowed a solo home run over one inning and took the loss Friday against the Rays as the Rockies fell 3-2. He struck out one. Vodnik is a candidate to close games out for the Rockies, but his 2025 debut will do him no favors in winning that role. Outfielder Kameron Misner jumped on the first pitch he saw from Vodnik and sent it over the fence in right for a walk-off winner for the Rays in their first game at Steinbrenner Field. Vodnik had nine saves in 2024 but also blew six save chances.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Pitches in seventh inning

Vodnik walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning Thursday against the Tigers. Vodnik was reinstated from the injured list Sunday and has made two scoreless appearances since -- each coming in the seventh inning. Meanwhile, Tyler Kinley has picked up both of Colorado's saves in that same span, suggesting Vodnik is out of the closer role for the time being.

  • Rockies' Victor Vodnik: Nearing return

Vodnik (biceps) has an "aggressive" side session scheduled for Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Vodnik threw for the first time since landing on the injured list Saturday and should be throwing at full strength Tuesday. Depending on how that session goes, Vodnik could either be activated or be sent on a brief rehab assignment.
