• Guardians' David Fry: Catches in season debut

  Fry started at catcher and went 2-for-5 with a double in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Mariners. Fry made his season debut and caught a game for the first time since July of 2024. Recovery from elbow surgery in November of that year limited him to DH and pinch hitting duties last season. Now fully recovered, Fry can get behind the dish again along with the other fielding positions in which he has experience. He's the third-string catcher behind Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges, who is day-to-day with a hand injury.

• Guardians' David Fry: Resumes catching

  Fry will spend the first part of spring training mainly as a catcher, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Fry, who was limited to DH and pinch-hitting duties in 2025 following his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery, will ultimately move around the field for the final weeks of camp. In addition to catching, Fry can play both corner spots in the infield and outfield, giving manager Stephen Vogt flexibility when creating a lineup on any given day. Fry was an All Star in 2024, when he slashed .263/.356/.448 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 392 plate appearances over 122 games.

• Guardians' David Fry: Lands contract from Cleveland

  Fry (face) agreed to a one-year, $1.38 million contract with the Guardians on Friday to avoid arbitration, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Fry had a tough 2025 season, as he was initially sidelined until the end of May while recovering from an elbow injury. His season ended in late September after being hit in the face by a pitch, though that isn't expected to affect his 2026 campaign. In between, Fry struggled to a .171/.229/.363 line across 157 plate appearances.

• Guardians' David Fry: Nasal surgery scheduled

  Fry will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair nasal fractures, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Fry suffered nasal and facial fractures when he was hit by a 99 mph fastball thrown by Tarik Skubal back on Sept. 24. He's expected to be fully recovered by early-to mid-November, so Fry should have a fairly typical offseason.

  The Guardians announced Wednesday that Fry will be sidelined six-to-eight weeks after sustaining multiple minimally displaced left-sided facial and nasal fractures in Tuesday's win over the Tigers. After being placed on the 10-day IL, Fry's season is likely over, even if the Guardians make the playoffs and advance all the way to the World Series. Fry was injured while attempting to bunt a 99-mph fastball from Tarik Skubal in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday. Instead, he fouled it off, and the ball hit Fry squarely in the face. Fry doesn't need surgery and is said to be resting comfortably after he was discharged from the hospital. Fry had a down 2025 season that saw him slash just .171/.229/.363 with eight home runs, 23 RBI, 16 runs scored, one stolen base and a 9:58 BB:K across 157 trips to the plate. He should be recovered well ahead of spring training.

• Guardians' David Fry: Hit in head, exits game

  Fry was removed from Tuesday's game against the Tigers after getting hit in the head by a foul ball, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Fry was hit in the face after fouling off an attempted bunt in the sixth inning. He was carted off the field immediately afterward and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The Guardians should provide an update on his status in the near future.

  Fry went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox. Fry collected his first hit since Aug. 14 with a two-run blast off Garrett Crochet in the sixth inning. It's been a struggle for Fry when in the lineup. He has just five hits in 40 at-bats since the beginning of August and is hitting .159 overall for the season. Fry posted an .804 OPS in 122 games for the Guardians in 2024 but just has not been able to get going following elbow surgery in the offseason.

Fry snapped a hitless run of 13 at-bats with a fourth-inning double and scored on a Carlos Santana single to knot the game at 2-2. Fry has become the go-to DH against left-handers, and since being activated off the 60-day injured list May 31, he's batting .160/.276/.320 over 12 games.

Fry struck out in his first at-bat before reaching base three straight times, including a solo homer in the sixth inning.   The Guardians reinstated Fry (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Saturday. Fry has spent the first portion of the season working his way back from an elbow procedure he underwent in November. He began playing in minor-league games May 13 and went 3-for-29 with a homer, five RBI and two runs scored during his nine-game rehab assignment. Despite his underwhelming performance, the Guardians feel he's ready to rejoin the active roster. Cody Bolton was designated for assignment to create room for Fry on the 40-man roster.

  Cleveland placed Fry (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. The transaction doesn't come as a surprise, after Fry underwent surgery in November to address a torn ligament in his elbow. Fry is expected to need 6-to-8 months to recover from surgery before he's ready to serve as a designated hitter, so he could have a chance at being ready to contribute for Cleveland when he's first eligible to come off the 60-day IL in late May. The 29-year-old will require 12 months of recovery time before he's cleared for full throwing, so he won't be an option behind the plate or in the field in 2025.

Fry batted .263/.356/.448 with 14 homers during the regular season for the Guardians.

  Fry went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Rangers. Fry's power has picked up in August -- he's hit five homers this month, giving him 13 for the year. That's about the only thing trending in the right direction for the 28-year-old, who has been losing playing time since he's hitting just .175 (10-for-57) across 19 games this month. Overall, Fry has a .265/.364/.454 slash line with 46 RBI, 40 runs scored, 14 doubles and four stolen bases over 102 contests.

Fry didn't play in the first game, but he started at first base in the second contest. The homer was his second over six games in August after he had just one extra-base hit, a double, in all of July. The 28-year-old has cooled off dramatically since his hot start to the year, but he still has a .275/.375/.447 slash line with 10 homers, 39 RBI, 36 runs scored, four stolen bases and 14 doubles over 89 contests. Fry hasn't been strictly platooned, but he's not an everyday option versus right-handed pitchers.

Though he was named a first-time All-Star and upholds an .860 OPS on the season, Fry is slashing just .130/.231/.130 over his last nine games and has started to lose out on regular playing time versus right-handed pitching. He'll be the odd man out of the lineup Sunday while Jose Ramirez gets a day out of the infield and serves as the Guardians' designated hitter.
