  Young went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Friday's 5-1 win over the Guardians. Young was held hitless Thursday, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts to start the season. He bounced back with a go-ahead blast in the fourth inning Friday, the fifth homer of his young major-league career. The second baseman launched six homers and added 18 RBI over 19 games in spring training, so there's some power potential, though he'll likely be negatively impacted by playing half his games at T-Mobile Park. He posted a .607 OPS, four homers, 24 RBI, 24 runs scored and one stolen base over 257 plate appearances during the 2025 regular season. Young looks to have a clear path to at-bats versus right-handed pitchers this season, and a strong start to the year could make him a near-everyday player.

• Mariners' Cole Young: Huge day vs. Guardians

  Young went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, a double, five total RBI and four total runs scored in Friday's 20-8 Cactus League victory over the Cleveland. Young started the Mariners' offensive outburst with a solo shot off Logan Allen in the second inning before blasting a two-run, 478-foot moonshot off Matt Festa in the sixth. Young has been on a tear this spring, batting .349 (15-for-43) with six homers in his last 13 Cactus League games. The 22-year-old infielder seems to have locked up a spot on Seattle's Opening Day roster, especially with J.P. Crawford's (shoulder) status still up in the air.

It had been a tough start to the spring for Young, who'd gone 0-for-8 with six strikeouts in his first four contests before launching a 442-foot homer off lefty Jacob Latz in the first inning Sunday. The 22-year-old Young continues to battle with top prospect Colt Emerson for the the final starting infield job. Young opened camp as the favorite, though his slow start may have closed the gap. Young appeared in 77 regular-season games as a rookie last year, batting .211 with a .607 OPS, four homers and one stolen base across 257 plate appearances.

  Young "would have to struggle mightily to lose his grip on the second-base job," Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. New acquisition Brendan Donovan's primary position has been second base, but he will enter spring training slated to see most of his action in 2026 at third base. Young put up just a .607 OPS in 257 plate appearances during his rookie season, but he is only 22 and the Mariners remain high on his long-term potential. If Young stumbles, Seattle could consider shifting Donovan over to second base and installing Colt Emerson at the hot corner.

Young's playing time tapered off for the Mariners down the stretch of the regular season and he did not play during the playoffs. However, Seattle remains high on the 22-year-old's potential despite a .211/.302/.305 batting line in 77 games this season. The Mariners could acquire a second baseman from outside the organization, but if they don't, the left-handed-hitting Young is the top candidate to start at least against righties. Leo Rivas and Ryan Bliss (knee) will also be in the mix.

He's drawn just one walk in that span, but he also just four strikeouts, which is a showcase of the steady plate discipline that helped him reach the majors as a 21-year-old. Overall, Young has a .259/.297/.306 slash line with no home runs, seven RBI, eight runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases. He's a contact-over-power player at the plate, and the speed should show up eventually -- he had 22 steals, albeit on 33 attempts, with Double-A Arkansas in 2024.

Young, the fourth-youngest qualified hitter at Double-A, could be passable at shortstop or quite good at second base for the Mariners in a couple years. He has a very advanced knowledge of the strike zone and logged an impressive 81.4 percent contact rate, but he doesn't hit the ball hard very often (22.0 percent hard-hit rate) and projects to offer modest power, especially if he calls T-Mobile Park home. If everything works out, the lefty-hitting Young could produce similarly to guys like Brice Turang and Bryson Stott.

Young, who turns 20 at the end of July, has made 69 starts at shortstop and eight starts at the keystone in his first full season in pro ball. He also saw brief action at second base last year in addition to his shortstop duties. Young's hit tool has been as advertised. He is using the whole field (36.3 Oppo%) and has limited the groundballs (42.1 percent) while also being a bit unlucky (.303 BABIP) on balls in play.
