Player Outlook
Joey Loperfido began the season with Houston where he hit his way onto the roster with a .272/.365/.568 line in Triple-A Sugerland, but was overexposed both with Houston and then with Toronto as he was part of the deal that sent Kikuchi to the Astros. Loperfido has a fun collection of tools and could hit 20-plus homers or steal 20-plus bases if he could get on base more frequently. He struck out in 36.3 percent of his plate appearances, which led to an OBP more befitting a second string catcher than an outfielder with upside. It should be expected that Loperfido would compete for a corner outfield job, at least whichever one isn't given to Springer. There are other names ahead of him on the depth chart as things stand in late November, but Loperfido is more talented than the other names in the outfield, and they all have options, so nobody has that particular advantage. If Loperfido can hit well in Dunedin in March, he has an excellent chance of making the club and being a late-round fantasy value in deeper league formats, however, he needs to close some of the holes that major-league pitchers attacked with regularity in 2024.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Fails to make Opening Day roster

The Blue Jays optioned Loperfido to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Loperfido was thought to be a frontrunner to either play center field if Daulton Varsho (shoulder) wasn't ready or left field if Varsho was on the active roster, but he ultimately didn't make the cut. The 25-year-old has slashed .207/.303/.414 with no home runs and a 9:4 K:BB over 14 games this spring.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Top option to fill in as CF

Loperfido has received most of the playing time in center field this spring while Daulton Varsho (shoulder) has been limited to DH duties, and the former Astro is the favorite to be the Blue Jays' Opening Day center fielder, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Loperfido hasn't done much with his bat in Grapefruit League action, batting .160 (4-for-25) with a 3:7 BB:K and zero home runs, but three of his four hits have gone for extra bases. The 25-year-old struggled at the plate last season as well after being acquired from Houston, but Toronto still believes in his potential after he slashed .256/.352/.498 with 18 homers and 13 steals in 71 games for Triple-A Sugar Land prior to being part of the Yusei Kikuchi deal.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Could return to games by Friday

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Wednesday that Loperfido (neck/back) will go through a full workout Thursday and could return to Grapefruit League play as soon as Friday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Loperfido suffered a neck/upper-back injury Tuesday when he collided with the outfield wall, but he emerged without any serious injuries and is not expected to miss much time. The 25-year-old is competing for a starting job in Toronto's outfield.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: No concussion symptoms

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Tuesday that Loperfido (neck/back) is not experiencing any concussion symptoms, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Loperfido was involved in a scary situation during Tuesday's game versus the Cardinals when he stumbled and crashed head-first into the outfield wall while chasing down a flyball. However, he appears to have avoided a serious injury, escaping with merely some neck and upper-back discomfort. Loperfido will be re-evaluated Wednesday but "hopefully doesn't miss much time," per Schneider.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Gets start in center field Saturday

Loperfido went 1-for-2 with a double in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. More importantly, the 25-year-old got the start in center field, a spot the Blue Jays will likely need to fill for the first week or two of the season while Daulton Varsho completes his recovery from shoulder surgery. Loperfido, acquired from the Astros last year in the Yusei Kikuchi trade, slashed just .197/.236/.343 over 144 plate appearances for Toronto in 2024, but his defensive versatility in the outfield and 20-20 upside if he puts everything together appear to make him the early favorite to be Varsho's understudy. Jonatan Clase, Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw also figure to get looks in center field during spring training.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: On bench Friday

Loperfido is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins. Loperfido is idle for the third time in seven games, giving way to Jonatan Clase in center field Friday. • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Back in action Wednesday

Loperfido (hip) is starting in center field and batting eighth Wednesday against the Rangers. The 25-year-old suffered an adductor injury during Saturday's matchup with the Cardinals and is rejoining the lineup Wednesday after a couple days off. Loperfido should continue seeing regular action in Toronto's outfield down the stretch, and he'll likely see more starts in center field since Daulton Varsho (shoulder) will miss the rest of the season.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Departs with injury

Loperfido was removed from Saturday's game against St. Louis with left adductor discomfort, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Loperfido appeared to be grabbing at his hip after hitting a double in the third inning of Saturday's contest, though he managed to stay in the game until the fifth frame. If his injury proves to be severe enough to prevent him from playing Sunday, Nathan Lukes would likely be the next man in line to start in left field.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Dropped from lineup Monday

Loperfido is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets. Loperfido will hit the bench after he started the final two games of the Blue Jays' weekend series with Atlanta, going 3-for-7 with a double and a walk between those contests. Since joining the Blue Jays at the trade deadline, Loperfido has put together a .222/.260/.394 slash line with a 32.7 percent strikeout rate over 29 games. Loperfido's lack of productivity has prevented him from fully taking control of an everyday spot in the Toronto outfield.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Sitting again Saturday

Loperfido isn't in the Blue Jays' lineup Saturday against the Twins. Loperfido will sit for the second game in a row Saturday as Nathan Lukes picks up another start in left field while batting eighth.

  • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Goes deep in win

Loperfido went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-4 win over the Angels. Loperfido led off the ninth inning with a game-tying blast of Roansy Contreras that was followed by a walk-off homer from fellow rookie Addison Barger. Loperfido may be heating up at the dish with multiple hits in four of his last five games, including two home runs over that span. The 25-year-old has a .732 OPS in 17 games with the Blue Jays and should continue to see regular at-bats down the stretch.

Loperfido is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. • Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Sent to Toronto

The Blue Jays acquired Loperfido, right-hander Jake Bloss and infielder Will Wagner from the Astros on Monday in exchange for left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After posting monstrous numbers at Triple-A Sugar Land, Loperfido had two separate stints in the majors with the Astros this season, batting .236 with two home runs, 16 RBI, 11 runs scored and two stolen bases over 118 plate appearances. The 25-year-old had begun to see his playing time slip a bit in Houston, but Loperfido's role could grow more stable as he joins a non-contending Blue Jays squad. He'll provide Toronto with a versatile asset, as he saw action at all three outfield spots as well as first base during his time in Houston.

Loperfido is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. Since being recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on June 21, Loperfido has mustered a lowly .179/.253/.313 slash line over 23 games.

  • Astros' Joey Loperfido: Back on bench Sunday

Loperfido is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins. After hitting the bench for a three-game stretch from last Saturday through Monday, Loperfido had started in four of the Astros' previous five contests while going 2-for-16 with a double and two RBI. He'll cede his spot in the lineup to Chas McCormick in Sunday's series finale, and both Loperfido and McCormick will likely see their playing time trend downward once Kyle Tucker (shin) is able to return from the 10-day injured list after the All-Star break.

  • Astros' Joey Loperfido: Out of Sunday's lineup

Loperfido is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Loperfido started six straight games before taking a seat for Saturday's contest, and he finds himself on the bench again Sunday. He collected three hits in his first game back from the injured list June 21 but has gone 1-for-15 in the ensuing five contests. Mauricio Dubon will take over in left field as Jon Singleton receives a start at first base.

  • Astros' Joey Loperfido: Getting fifth straight start

Loperfido will start in right field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Loperfido will stick in the starting nine for a fifth straight game after going 4-for-13 with two doubles, one walk, two RBI, one stolen base and one run through his first four games since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Sugar Land. Houston has room in its everyday outfield for both Loperfido and Chas McCormick for the moment, but one of the two will likely lose out on playing time once Kyle Tucker (shin) makes his return from the 10-day injured list, perhaps as soon as next week.

  • Astros' Joey Loperfido: Big game in return to majors

Loperfido went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI in Friday's win over Baltimore. Loperfido was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday and made his first MLB appearance since June 10. He wasted no time making an impact, singling on the second pitch he saw in his first at-bat and later coming around to score. He added a pair of RBI doubles during Houston's monster nine-run sixth inning. Loperfido is forcing his way into more playing time at the top level with his consistent success. He's slashing .372/.413/.512 through his first 16 career MLB games.
