The final spot on the bench came down to Schneider and utility infielder Leo Jimenez, but Schneider's right-handed bat won out. The 27-year-old posted a .797 OPS with 11 homers in 227 plate appearances last season, and he could see steady work as a short-side platoon partner for corner outfielders Jesus Sanchez and Addison Barger, while also serving as an option at second base when one of the Jays' starting middle infielders, Andres Gimenez and Ernie Clement, needs a breather.

  Schneider will handle the short side of a platoon with Nathan Lukes in left field to begin the season, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports. With Anthony Santander (shoulder) potentially set to miss the entire season, the Blue Jays will turn to their collection of role players to fill the gap in the lineup. Schneider hasn't shown a platoon split in the majors and actually hit better against right-handed pitching in 2025, posting a .915 OPS against same-handed hurlers in 99 plate appearances versus a .708 OPS in 129 PAs versus lefties. It's possible that if the 27-year-old doesn't improve those numbers, he could lose playing time to the defensively superior Myles Straw.

Schneider got Toronto on the board with a solo shot off Simeon Woods Richardson in the second inning before cutting the deficit to 6-4 with his second homer in the fourth. It's the third two-homer game of the year for Schneider, who has just 10 long balls overall this season. Prior to Wednesday, the 26-year-old Schneider had gone just 1-for-12 in a part-time role in his previous six contests. He's now slashing .254/.373/.500 with 27 RBI and 27 runs scored across 169 plate appearances this year.
