Ashby (oblique) will be shut down for about two weeks before resuming a throwing program, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby said Friday that the second opinion on his right oblique strain was more favorable than the first, but he will still need some down time and will not be ready for Opening Day. The left-hander anticipates being stretched back out as a starting pitcher, but it's unclear what his role will be with the Brewers once he's healthy.... See More ... See Less

Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Seeking second opinion on injury
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Ashby (oblique) will receive a second opinion on his injury in the coming days, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. After Ashby exited Monday in his most recent Cactus League appearance, he was sent in Tuesday for an MRI, which revealed a left oblique strain. The grade of the strain remains undetermined, however, and Murphy said he's hopeful that Ashby's second opinion brings more clarity on that front. Once the Brewers know the full scope of Ashby's injury, a clearer timeline for his return will likely be established, but even a minor oblique strain would likely put the southpaw on the outside looking in for a spot on the Opening Day roster.... Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Diagnosed with oblique strain
Ashby was pulled from Monday's spring training game against the Reds due to a left oblique strain, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby made it through one inning Monday before being pulled with the injury. Skipper Pat Murphy stated that it's unlikely to be a months-long absence for Ashby, but the club will know more after the southpaw undergoes imaging Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Joins big-league club
The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday. The left-hander has started in 14 of his 25 appearances for Nashville this season, and he's recently been operating out of the bullpen. Ashby has delivered six straight scoreless appearances at Triple-A and has a 14:1 K:BB during that stretch. He'll step into a relief role for the Brewers, taking the roster spot of Nick Mears (forearm).... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Optioned to Triple-A
The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday. The Brewers are down multiple starters due to injury, so this move seems to reflect their lack of faith in Ashby. The left-hander made a start Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing just two runs but walking five over five innings. He will remain stretched out in the Nashville rotation.... See More ... Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Fights control in loss
Ashby (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Brewers were downed 2-0 by the Phillies, giving up two runs on two hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out three. The southpaw was recalled from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day but had trouble finding the plate, tossing 49 of 91 pitches for strikes, and Ashby eventually paid for the free passes in the fifth inning when Garrett Stubbs led off the frame with a walk before Nick Castellanos clubbed a two-run homer. With Robert Gasser (elbow) the latest Milwaukee pitcher to land on the IL, Ashby figures to get multiple turns in the rotation. He lines up to make his next outing at home early next week against the Blue Jays.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Recalled ahead of start
The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday. He will draw the start Wednesday in Philadelphia, taking the rotation spot of the injured Robert Gasser (elbow). Ashby was knocked around in his lone previous start with Milwaukee this season back on April 8 in Cincinnati, and though he's struggled on the whole at Nashville this season (6.80 ERA, 1.99 WHIP in 43.2 innings), he fired seven shutout frames in his most recent outing last Friday. Ashby could be needed for multiple turns through the rotation with Gasser likely to be out for a while.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Could start Wednesday vs. Phillies
Ashby joined the Brewers' taxi squad in Philadelphia and could be formally called up from Triple-A Nashville to start or work as a bulk reliever in Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby appears poised to slide into the rotation spot that belonged to Robert Gasser, who is awaiting a second opinion on his sore elbow and is expected to land on the 15-day injured list and miss out on at least a couple of starts. In his lone start for Milwaukee this season back on April 9 in Cincinnati, Ashby was blitzed for eight runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings. Upon returning to Nashville after that game, Ashby continued to struggle in his subsequent seven outings at Triple-A (9.54 ERA, 2.54 WHIP and 30:30 K:BB in 26.1 innings), but he's righted the ship over his past two starts. He delivered his best performance of the season in his most recent of the two starts Friday versus Memphis, striking out five over seven scoreless frames while allowing two hits and three walks. With Gasser set to go on the shelf and the Brewers still waiting on Joe Ross (back), Jakob Junis (shoulder) and DL Hall (knee) to return from the IL, Ashby could be in store for multiple turns through the rotation if he fares reasonably well Wednesday.... Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Sent back to minors
Ashby was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers on Tuesday. The move comes a day after the left-hander was torched for eight runs (four earned) over 3.2 innings against the Reds. Ashby should get another shot in the rotation eventually, but the Brewers' bullpen needs help so Kevin Herget has been summoned.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Roughed up in loss
Ashby (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out two. Ashby faced a tough test Monday night against the Reds on the road for his first major-league appearance since October 2022. The 25-year-old left-hander also worked with a significantly diminished pitch arsenal compared to 2022, as his sinker averaged only 93.6 mph, down 2.1 mph. Ashby should continue to occupy a place in the Brewers rotation until Jakob Junis (shoulder) is healthy. He is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Orioles.... See More ... Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Roughed up in spring debut
Ashby (shoulder) retired one of the six batters he faced and gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits and one walk Saturday in the Brewers' 11-3 loss to the Dodgers in Cactus League play. Ashby is getting the chance to compete for a spot in the Brewers' Opening Day rotation after he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from the left shoulder surgery he underwent last April. Though he was deployed in relief in his spring debut, Ashby still saw a healthy workload Saturday, as he tossed 24 pitches (12 strikes) while facing six hitters. Unsurprisingly, Ashby looked rusty while pitching in a competitive setting for the first time since October 2022, but the Brewers are hoping that he'll be able to iron out the kinks over his subsequent spring appearances. Ashby still has two minor-league options remaining, so the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville to begin the 2024 campaign if they're not confident that he's ready to pitch effectively at the big-league level by late March.... Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Healthy and aiming for rotation
Ashby (shoulder) told reporters Friday that he's healthy and will be competing for a spot in the Brewers' rotation this spring, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby had left shoulder surgery last April and was roughed up in seven rehab appearances after returning, posting a 15.43 ERA. His velocity was reportedly trending in the right direction as of last fall, so it will be interesting to see what the radar gun says this spring. It's not clear when the southpaw will be making his Cactus League debut. When he's healthy, Ashby has loads of upside, but he has some boxes to check from a stuff and performance standpoint before fantasy managers should get excited.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Velocity trending up
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Tuesday that Ashby's (shoulder) velocity has been trending in the right direction during recent throwing sessions, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby underwent left shoulder surgery in April and struggled to regain his pre-op velocity initially. However, it sounds like it has ticked back up as he further distances himself from the operation. Ashby wound up being limited to just seven rehab innings in 2023, but the hope is that he will be ready to go for spring training.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Begins rehab assignment
Ashby (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Saturday. Ashby has been on the injured list all season while recovering from a shoulder surgery he underwent in early April. After pitching several side sessions to work out some issues with his delivery, the 25-year-old southpaw is now ready to return to game action. Ashby should be able to rejoin Milwaukee's bullpen as a multi-inning reliever before the end of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Nearing rehab assignment
Ashby (shoulder) is on track to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next Saturday at High-A Wisconsin, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby has been working through some mechanical issues but recently turned a corner and looks ready to pitch in a live game for the first time in 2023. The 25-year-old left-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder in April. Ashby tossed a 35-pitch bullpen session Saturday, and he'll head to the Brewers' spring training complex in Arizona this week for a live batting practice session before he reports to Milwaukee's Midwest League affiliate. He's expected to serve as a multi-inning reliever for the Brewers once he returns from the 60-day injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Not ready for rehab games
Ashby (shoulder) acknowledged Tuesday that he is still working on his delivery in side sessions, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. At last check, the 25-year-old left-hander was said to be nearing a minor-league rehab assignment, but his velocity hasn't returned to full force and he'll need more time before returning to live games. Ashby has been on the shelf all season due to a shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery back in early April.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Rehab decision coming
The Brewers will make a decision on when to send Ashby (shoulder) on a rehab assignment "very soon," Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby has been throwing bullpens and batting practice at the Brewers' complex in Arizona with no issues, but he hasn't been able to get up to his usual velocity. As a result, the team will be forced to decide whether to keep building Ashby up or send him on a minor-league rehab assignment. Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the importance of having Ashby capable of operating at "full octane" for Milwaukee down the stretch, but he added there will be "hurdles to clear" in order to do so.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Nearing game action
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Ashby (shoulder) will begin appearing in rehab games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League in the near future, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby remains without a clear timeline to make his season debut for Milwaukee, but the Brewers intend to use him out of the bullpen once he completes his rehab assignment, given that working as a reliever will allow for a quicker buildup. The 25-year-old is already in Arizona working his way through a throwing program and has resumed tossing bullpen sessions. He'll likely need to face live hitters in batting practice on a few occasions before the Brewers formally clear him to play in ACL games.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Moved to 60-day injured list
The Brewers moved Ashby (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby is expected to miss the majority of the season after undergoing surgery on his shoulder. The move to the 60-day IL clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Bennett Sousa after Sousa was traded to Milwaukee from the Reds on Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Headed for shoulder surgery
Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Wednesday that Ashby needs arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The procedure is scheduled for Friday and could knock Ashby out for the entire season. He was placed on the 15-day injured list just before Opening Day after being diagnosed with an impingement and slight labral tear back in late February. The initial hope was that the 24-year-old southpaw might be able to join the Brewers by mid-May, but treatment and rest failed to solve the issue. Milwaukee will likely soon move him to the 60-day IL.... See More ... See Less
