Fermin gave the Padres an 8-4 lead with his two-run blast in the fifth inning. The former Royal is locked into the starting catcher role for the Padres this season after spending several years backing up Salvador Perez in Kanas City. Fermin has been swinging a hot bat this spring, posting a .458/.480/.833 slash line with two homers, 10 RBI and nine runs through nine games.

• Padres' Freddy Fermin: Avoids arbitration with San Diego

  Fermin signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Padres on Thursday to avoid arbitration. Fermin was traded by the Royals to the Padres in late July, and across both clubs he posted a .636 OPS with one steal, 32 runs, 13 doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI over 347 plate appearances during the 2025 regular season. The 30-year-old projects to be the Padres' No. 1 catcher to begin 2026 while Luis Campusano serves as the backup.

Fermin has slashed .255/.309/.339 with three homers, 12 RBI and 17 runs scored across 208 plate appearances with the Royals this season. While those numbers don't exactly jump off the page, they're still good enough to make him the frontrunner for starts behind the plate in San Diego over Elias Diaz (.577 OPS) and Martin Maldonado (.572 OPS).

He's hit safely in the last six games where he's received a plate appearance, but his effort in Thursday's nightcap was his first with multiple hits since May 6. The catcher is at a .255/.301/.340 slash line with two homers, eight RBI, 11 runs scored and three doubles over 114 plate appearances. If he can't turn things around with the bat, he'll likely continue to be confined to a backup role as Salvador Perez continues to be capable of working behind the plate as a starter.
