• Braves' Robert Suarez: Wrapping up strong spring

  Suarez has allowed one run on four hits with a 9:1 K:BB over five Grapefruit League innings this spring. The 35-year-old right-hander racked up 76 saves for San Diego with a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 9.0 K/9 over the prior two seasons, but he'll begin his time in Atlanta as the top setup man for closer Raisel Iglesias. Suarez could still see ninth-inning action when Iglesias is unavailable, and if the incumbent struggles again early as he did in 2025, it wouldn't be a surprise if the two switched roles.

  Suarez will be a late arrival to spring training due to visa issues, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. The right-hander joined Atlanta on a three-year, $45 million contract in December, but he won't be able to report to camp with the rest of the pitchers and catchers Tuesday. It's unclear when Suarez's travel troubles are expected to be resolved, but he's still got plenty of runway to work with to ramp up for Opening Day.

  Suarez became a free agent after opting out of his contract Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Suarez had an $8 million player option in 2026 and 2027, but he will forgo those and enter the free-agent market. The 34-year-old led the National League with 40 saves in 2025 and boasts a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 134:32 K:BB over 134.2 regular-season innings since the start of the 2024 campaign. Suarez should have no trouble landing a sizeable contract this offseason to serve as a closer.

  Suarez allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals. The Padres' bullpen got a massive boost with the addition of Mason Miller at Thursday's trade deadline, but it was still Suarez in the ninth inning -- and against the top of the Cardinals' order -- in Friday's game. Miller worked the eighth inning, allowing two hits in a scoreless frame. Manager Mike Shildt has plenty of high-leverage arms to work with, but it remains to be seen which reliever, if any, will get a clear-cut closer role. Suarez leads the majors with 31 saves and has a 3.35 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 47:12 K:BB across 45.2 innings this season, but he posted a 4.87 ERA over 20.1 innings in June and July combined, so his stability has potentially taken a hit. Nonetheless, it looks like Suarez is at least in the mix for save chances over the last two months of 2025.

After Spencer Steer drove De La Cruz home on a single to knot the contest at 2-2, Will Benson eventually walked off the Padres by roping a single to right field with the bases loaded. This snaps a stretch of eight consecutive converted saves for Suarez that he achieved over 15 appearances. Suarez was called upon to protect a four-run lead in the ninth inning, but he couldn't get the job done. He gave up three straight singles, then struck out Corbin Carroll before giving up an RBI single to Ketel Marte and a game-tying three-run triple to Geraldo Perdomo. Adrian Morejon allowed an inherited runner to score, and that was charged to Suarez, sending him to his first loss since his other five-run implosion of the year back on May 12 versus the Angels. Those account for two of the four appearances in which Suarez has been scored on this season. This outing inflated his ERA from 1.78 to 3.23. but he still has a sparkling 0.88 WHIP and 33:8 K:BB across 30.2 innings. He also has 21 saves in 23 chances, and as long as this kind of performance doesn't become more regular, Suarez's status as the Padres' closer is safe.
