  • Reds' Chase Petty: Bumped up to Triple-A

The Reds promoted Petty from Double-A Chattanooga to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Petty had an up and down season at Chattanooga, but he completed a season-high seven frames in each of his final three starts before the promotion, logging a 2.14 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 21 innings over that stretch. On the season, the 21-year-old righty logged a 4.39 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 123:56 K:BB in 127 innings at Double-A. His walk rate spiked to 10.4 percent this season after it had been below six percent at his previous three stops.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Fans career-high nine batters

Petty struck out a career-high nine batters Tuesday for Double-A Chattanooga while allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks over five innings. Petty has a 5.81 ERA and 1.58 WHIP on the season, but he's got a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 20 innings over his last four starts, all of which have been five-inning starts for the 21-year-old righty. Known for his triple-digit fastball velocity as an amateur, Petty was only sitting in the 93-95 mph range while displaying pinpoint control last year. However, he worked on adding velocity in the offseason and has sat 96-98 mph with his fastball this year with an upper-80s slider. Petty is the third-youngest qualified starter at Double-A, behind Caden Dana and Robby Snelling.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Healthy at High-A

Petty (elbow) was activated from the 7-day injured list Saturday and gave up one earned run while striking out three over four innings in his return to action Wednesday for High-A Dayton. He missed a little over a month to start the season, but given that it was an elbow injury, it's excellent news that he still has a chance to have a pretty normal age-20 season. Petty was known more for his velocity entering the 2021 draft, but he's now more of a strike thrower who sits in the low 90s with his sinker and misses bats with his slider.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Climbs to High-A

The Reds promoted Petty from Single-A Daytona to High-A Dayton on Wednesday. Petty, who was the main piece the Reds received in the March trade that sent Sonny Gray to Minnesota, will advance to Dayton after he submitted a 3.18 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 60:23 K:BB across 65 innings with Daytona.

  • Reds' Chase Petty: Shipped to Cincinnati

The Reds acquired Petty from the Twins on Sunday in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher Sonny Gray and minor-league right-hander Francisco Peguero. The transaction is a signal that the Reds are gearing up for a rebuild, as Gray was Cincinnati's No. 2 starter in 2021, while Petty was the No. 26 overall pick in last summer's First-Year Player Draft and is multiple years away from the majors. The 18-year-old right-hander is blessed with a big fastball that can touch 100 miles per hour, but improving his command and developing his secondary offerings will be essential if he's to emerge as a frontline starter in the big leagues down the road. He'll likely open the 2022 campaign at the rookie-ball level before potentially moving up to Low-A Daytona, though he's expected to be on some sort of innings cap for this season, given his relative youth.
