  Boyd (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Nationals, allowing six runs on six hits and a walk across 3.2 innings. He struck out seven. After getting the Opening Day nod, Boyd got off to a strong start, holding Washington to one run on one hit through his first three innings. However, things unraveled for the left-hander in the fourth -- the first five batters in the inning reached safely against Boyd, who was eventually tagged for another five runs en route to a 10-4 Cubs defeat. Boyd, who was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA across 31 regular-season starts (179.2 innings) in 2025, will look to bounce back his next time out, tentatively scheduled to come next week at home against the Angels.

• Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Grabs Opening Day nod

  The Cubs have named Boyd their Opening Day starter, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. He'll be tasked with facing the Nationals and Cade Cavalli on March 26. Boyd earned the Opening Day nod following a terrific first season in Chicago which saw him collect a 3.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 154:42 K:BB across 179.2 regular-season innings.

  Boyd didn't allow a baserunner over three scoreless innings during Thursday's Cactus League game against the Angels. He struck out three. Making his second start of the spring, Boyd looked sharp as he kept Los Angeles off the bases for three innings. The veteran lefty now has seven strikeouts across 4.2 Cactus League innings. Boyd's K/9 dropped to 7.7 last year, his lowest rate since 2021, and he's unlikely to see any dramatic upticks at this point in his career. However, even modest gains in the strikeout department would boost the southpaw's fantasy stock in 2026. Outside of the drop in strikeouts, Boyd was excellent for the Cubs in 2025, recording a 3.21 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 179.2 regular-season innings.

  Boyd took the loss in Saturday's NLDS Game 1 against the Brewers, giving up six runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning. Boyd took the mound on three days' rest and with a 1-0 lead Saturday, but he saw it quickly evaporate after giving up consecutive doubles to Jackson Chourio (hamstring), Brice Turang and William Contreras to lead off the inning. Boyd went on to allow three more runners to reach base and eventually score, but a fielding error from Nico Hoerner prevented them from counting against the left-hander's ledger. Considering how much Boyd struggled while pitching on shorter rest, the Cubs will likely give him the proper four days before sending him back on the bump, putting him in line to start Game 4 on Thursday (if needed).

Boyd likely would have conceded a few more runs if it weren't for Dansby Swanson's defense, and consistent hard contact from San Diego's offense led to the southpaw's removal in the fifth inning after just 58 pitches. If the Cubs manage to advance to the NLDS, Boyd would likely be called upon to start Game 2 in Milwaukee on Monday.

The southpaw hasn't had a workload this heavy since 2019, so it's possible he's wearing down a bit late in the campaign. He'll try to get back on track in his next start, which is projected to be in Colorado this weekend.

He's held the opposition off the scoreboard in five of his last seven outings, posting a dazzling 1.40 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 39:8 K:BB over 45 innings during that stretch, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in St. Louis.
