Knapp was released by the Reds on Tuesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Knapp had a clause in his contract that allowed him to opt out if he failed to make the major-league roster, so the Reds made the decision themselves to allow him to pursue other opportunities. Knapp's career .214/.314/.322 slash line is passable enough for a backup catcher, but when combined with subpar defense behind the plate, he's more of a third option, potentially making it tough for him to find a major-league deal.
