No. 21 Clemson and NC State will open ACC play with a matchup in Death Valley on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers might have gotten things back on track after their season-opening loss to Georgia, and the Wolfpack will be starting a freshman quarterback on the road.
Clemson should be well-rested coming into this matchup. The Tigers had an open date last weekend, and in their last outing, they thrashed Appalachian State 66-20. That was a welcomed sight for the offense after that side of the ball was held to just three points in Clemson's Week 1 loss to Georgia.
The most encouraging sign in that blowout of the Mountaineers was that quarterback Cade Klubnik seemed to regain some confidence. The former five-star recruit threw for 378 yards and five touchdowns despite being pulled from the game early. If he keeps that up in conference play, Clemson will be tough to stop.
On the other side, freshman quarterback CJ Bailey will make his first career start in Death Valley. In last week's win over Louisiana Tech, Grayson McCall went down with an injury, and Bailey helped the Wolfpack score 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The 20 passes Bailey attempted against the Bulldogs were the only ones of his college career, so he will get some baptism by fire this weekend.
The last time NC State faced a Power Four opponent, it resulted in a 51-10 drubbing at the hands of Tennessee. The Wolfpack must have a better effort against Clemson if they want to leave with a 1-0 record in conference play.
