Virginia Tech announced Thursday morning that WR D.J. Coles will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee during Monday's win over Georgia Tech.

Coles had surgery over the offseason to repair a torn ligament in the knee and was cleared to participate in practice in mid-August.

The senior played in Monday's game but left with a knee injury in the first quarter. The school said it wasn't related to his previous injury.

Coach Frank Beamer said on Wednesday's ACC coaches teleconference that Coles' knee was swollen, and he would be meeting with doctors later in the week.

The school will seek a medical redshirt for Coles.

In anticipation of losing Coles, Beamer discussed the team's receiver options in Coles' absence on Wednesday's call.

"We're just going to have to step up," Beamer said. "Our plan is, I think (Demitri) Knowles
needs to be more involved. We got to get him more reps and make sure he's getting the right thing done in practice, get him into the game more. (Joshua) Stanford , a true freshman, although he didn't play the other night, get him involved. (Kevin) Asante has to keep coming along."

Knowles, a redshirt freshman, had a 42-yard TD catch Monday, his only catch of the game. He also returned a kickoff for 20 yards.

Coles had 36 catches for 480 yards and three touchdowns last season.
