Toledo defensive lineman Jahneil Douglas died after he was shot on Tuesday night, the university confirmed on Wednesday morning in a statement. Douglas was the victim in an incident that reportedly took place outside of a restaurant around 11:30 p.m. near downtown Toledo. He was 22 years old.
"The University and all of Rocket Nation mourn the death of junior football player Jahneil Douglas, who was shot in an incident in Toledo last night," Toledo said on its Twitter account.
"We were all shocked to learn of the tragic death of Jahneil Douglas," added Rockets athletic director Mike O'Brien. "This is a devastating loss for our football team and our University, and a very sad day for all of us in Rocket Nation."
Coach Jason Candle was also among those within the program to share their condolences on social media.
According to detectives for the case, a fight outside of Gino's Pizza between two men resulted in shots being fired. The victim was then taken to the hospital where he later died. Although the restaurant has surveillance video near where the shooting happened, there is no word yet on an arrest in the case.
Douglas was a junior who appeared in 12 games with the Rockets.
