It never rains in Tiger Stadium, but it might run rampant with beer come this September. LSU insinuated this week that there are plans to sell beer at a beer garden at home football games as early as the 2017 season.

Here is Business Report

Limited beer sales in Tiger Stadium could become a reality by the start of the fall football season. LSU officials confirm that plans for a beer garden in the stadium are firming up, though the deal hasn’t been finalized yet. “We are aggressively working to have it in place in the fall,” says LSU Spokesman Ernie Ballard. “But we are still working through everything to make it happen.”

So it’s not a matter of “if” but rather when.

And there are great reasons for this, too. Look at what Texas has done at its football games. The Horns generated $3.1 million in revenue from the sale of alcohol last year which would be a boon for any athletic department.

LSU’s revenue is general around $130-140 million per year.

One key component of this potential revenue generator is the fact that the SEC does not allow schools to sell alcohol except in private areas like club and suite-level seating. Here’s Business Report again.

The SEC prohibits its 14 member schools from selling alcohol at athletic events, which is why beer sales at LSU home games are only allowed in the stadium club and suites, technically separate structures from Tiger Stadium.

So that’s going to be tricky. But you can bet with the amount of money that’s potentially on the table for a place like LSU, athletic director Joe Alleva will figure out with the SEC how to get something like this done.
