Carter-Finley Stadium has been harsh to FSU, where the Seminoles have lost their last two contests. (US Presswire) |
NC STATE WON. Florida State jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead, but they could not hold off a furious second half charge from NC State and the Wolfpack pulled the upset of the No. 3 team in the country 17-16. Mike Glennon led a 12 play drive in the final minutes with no timeouts, finishing with a touchdown pass to Bryan Underwood on 4th and Goal with only 16 seconds left on the clock. The Wolfpack were able so survive thanks to forcing field goals during a first half dominated by Florida State. Seminoles' running back Chris Thompson picked up over 100 of his 141 rushing yards in that first half, but was mostly bottled up in the second half. Along with the extra pressure they started bringing on Manuel, it was the perfect recipe for a comeback.
HOW NC STATE WON: Credit NC State for making major adjustments on both sides of the ball during the game, and willing themselves back into the game when it appeared like the Wolfpack were done. The Wolfpack defense held the Seminoles to just 120 yards of offense in the second half, thanks to much better play on the edge and more aggressive blitzing from the front seven. The Florida State offensive line looked overwhelmed with the pressure, and Manuel did not have the time to find threats downfield like he did in the first half.
Mike Glennon lived up to every bit of pro hype with his two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter - the latter of which he pulled off with no timeouts. Glennon finished the night with 30 completions on 55 attempts for 259 yards and the two touchdown passes that gave NC State another memorable takedown of Florida State in Carter-Finley Stadium.
WHEN NC STATE WON: NC State kept grinding all game, scraping for extra yards and any opportunities they were given. Because of Florida State's inability to collect first downs in the fourth quarter, Glennon and Co. were given just one too many opportunities for Florida State to win. The Wolfpack didn't have it sealed until Underwood pulled in the game winning score with 16 seconds left - their first lead of the game.
WHAT NC STATE WON: After giving up a last minute game winning touchdown to Stephen Morris in Coral Gables a week ago, the Wolfpack were able to deliver their own knockout blow at home against the Seminoles. This win immediately erases any "lack of effort" or "who's in" talk from around the program, instead refocusing the Woflpack as they prepare to take on the meat of ACC play.
WHAT FLORDA STATE LOST: Control of the ACC Atlantic Division, their Top 5 status in college football, and likely any shot at a national championship. Florida State's offensive execution in the second half was beyond suspect, and definitely a reason for concern as the ACC frontrunners proceed with the conference schedule. After carving up the Wolfpack on the ground in the first half, they had were unable to open the same lanes after NC State's adjustments.
